I'm having problems trying to upgrade Windows 10 to 11 on my Lenovo Ideapad 330. Microsoft reports it meets the requirements to run Windows 11, but first of all, when trying to upgrade through Windows update or by the Windows installation assistant, it downloads and installs all the way, but then it says "there were some problems getting updates, but we'll try again later." So I try creating installation media on usb and run the upgrade app there but on the installing windows 11 screen, it always crashes around 79% complete with the program has stopped working error, or it just silently closes itself. sometimes it may not even get to the installing windows screen and crashes on the "making sure you're ready to install" screen. my only option at this point would be to boot from installation media where you can only do a clean install, but I don't want to lose all my data. so is there a way I can fix this problem?

As a side note, when one is concerned about losing important, one should use some sort of backup solution to keep this data backed up in case it becomes necessary to clean install. I can not express the importance of this enough because at some point hardware failure or file corruption could require a clean install.

Have you tried creating the .iso using the MCT tool and then mounting the .iso? You should be able run the setup.exe from that and then select the upgrade option. I think you're trying to download and upgrade at the same time which can be very flaky, especially if you don't have very stable network connection.

This is a semi-random suggestion, but I'd try running the System File Checker to see whether there are fixable issues with your Windows 10.

As far as I know, it will do no harm.

I second (third?) the suggestion about backups.

In the extreme, you could save all your data to an external drive, and restore them after a clean install of 11. The main loss could be of any programs that came pre-installed with the laptop, if you have no installers for them.
