Windows 11 version 22H2 build 22621 rumored to be released on September 20, 2022

UPDATE 9/20:

Microsoft is yet to announce an official release date for Windows 11 version 22H2, but I have heard via my own contacts that the current planned general availability date is set for September 20. This date could still change, but that's what I'm told Microsoft is aiming for as of right now. The launch build of version 22H2 will ship as build 22621.

Additionally, I hear that the company is planning to roll out its first "moment" update for version 22H2 before the end of this year, which will add a handful of additional features that weren't finalized in time for the launch build such as tabs in File Explorer and Suggested Actions. This is what Microsoft is testing with Windows Insiders running build 22622 right now.

As always, until these plans are officially announced, the dates mentioned here could slip. But this is the current plan.

I was going to do that but I'm afraid I might have to do clean install to go to normal version. On second disk I have Insider Dev.

It's still an unfinished version (if any MS thing is ever finished, lol) and are bound to have some updates and changes or they woul release it already.

Me too. A couple of my applications no longer are supported and I don't think I can reinstall them. My Windows 11 directory has bloated itself up to 19.3 GB logical/13.2 GB physical. How to choose which is less wore/risky: a clean install, or continuing to update my current installation?

TBH, we've probably all been looking at the biggest clue for Microsoft's intended timetable for ages now.
Ever wondered about that expiry date? Or why it never changes?

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Mine skipped W8/8.1, going from W7 straight to W10. Then migrated to a new machine to be able to get W11. Still running clean and lean despite its long and distinguished upgrade history, so I'll let it update to 22H2 when offered.

It's funny to me how people have such varied opinions, sometimes strongly held, on whether a clean install or upgrade is better.

Personally, I'm in the clean install camp. But, in my case, I guess part of that preference may simply be that I have so many automated processes in place so that I can do a complete clean install including Windows customization and installation of all apps in well under 2 hours. In fact, I'm convinced that I can do a clean install faster than Windows does the upgrade.

The one exception to me is when you have one of those small upgrades, for example, the upgrades that use an enablement package.

I don't really have much choice with my System One. There are a few things on it that can never be reinstalled, such as it's Office Starter 2010 that was only ever available in an OEM install of Win7. I generally will clean install when I first get another machine, as I did for my other supported device (see 'System Three' in My Computers 'Other Info' below).

The two machines are both running fully updated W11 21H2, and I really cannot say one is a 'better' install than the other. Whether they got their W11 by a clean install or through serial upgrades seems to make no difference as far as 'OS cleanliness' is concerned.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop.

I don't really have much choice with my System One. There are a few things on it that can never be reinstalled, such as it's Office Starter 2010 that was only ever available in an OEM install of Win7.
That's really interesting. That's a scenario that I had not considered, but it makes perfect sense.

That would be good, the sooner the better. I decided to do clean install as this one started as W7 than upgraded to w8 and 8.1 to w 10 an finally W11. high time to go clean. It's gonna take couple of weeks though, have to reinstall all programs and games.
I did a clean install of 22621.1 and it is now .382. There was never any mention of "insider program" on my computer. It's the RTM version, it would NOT be on the insider program on a clean install. It will only keep insider status if an insider computer is upgraded to it.

My problem is not reinstalling windows, XP I reinstalled couple of times a year mainly because it was easy and maintaining it took longer than reinstall but also small disks and small number of applications
Now I have over 200 applications and games, some of them payed and have to be reactivated but for some activation expired although they still work but may not activate again if reinstalled. There's also a question of hundred or so passwords on bunch of sites.
Because of smaller Windows disk in the past I have games and some applications installed on other disks but now I would like to consolidate them on one disk/partition for easier backup and restoration.. If you think it's kinda messy you'd be right.

Passwords are remembered by Edge even after a re-install. I wish game stores gave us an .exe installer so we don't need to re-download everything after a re-install, that's what takes the most time

I don't use Edge much, mostly Firefox which also remembers passwords but not all, some like banking I deliberately banned from saving.
For games, I think only Steam has utility for changing installaition places.

Apart from this being relatively old news, the nice things about rumours is without official documentation, they are just that i.e. a rumour.

MS rarely give an official firm date until much closer to the time, in case they get last minute glitches that delay release.

In simple terms, I will believe the date when MS formally announce it (accepting it could still get delayed).

Frankly, I do not really care as I have been running 22621 RP as my main OS for many weeks now and it is pretty rock solid. Sure there are a few minor rough edges but if you compare that with some of early W10 releases, it is in a far better state overall.

Frankly, most of this new build is largely cosmetic, with few real new features - the main one being File Explorer with Tabs.

I'm on an insider channel, updated originally from released version (can't remember which) but I have no mention of insider version or an expiry date in winver. Maybe it's because it's already the release vesion. Idon't know how Microsoft view ther different versions.
