Okay, I've just downloaded the latest updates in the Beta Channel for the Windows 11 Insider program, and I have a minor UI glitch in the tabbed Explorer interface.

I don't know if this has been addressed, and I apologize if this is a duplicate query; however, I'd like to resolve this. This particular laptop is the one I'm using to test out new features, so I do not have this issue on my desktop.

large_tabs.png

As you can see in above image, the tab is quite large, and has pushed the menus down so that they are barely visible. Is there a fix for this issue? If so, can someone either tell me what I need to do, or redirect me to a page about solving this issue. Thanks.

Thank god I thought I was the only one.

I have been dealing with this exact same issue ever since receiving the new File Explorer with Tabs on my development preview build.

Sadly you are the first person I have seen reporting this issue besides me.

Yep ever time I open File Explorer either in a new window or Tab you can actually see the command bar pushed down and becomes hidden just like you describe.

I wonder what is causing it?

I am testing Windows 11 on my 7 year old MSI CUBI which uses a Intel CPU i5 5200U along with 8GB of memory.

Also not sure if this has anything to do with it but officially my computer is not on the Windows 11 supported list.

I hope Microsoft knows about it and will be fixing it soon.

I noticed it after I downloaded the updates this evening, and yes as you described the tab literally pushes the command bar down.

I'm not sure as to what is causing it, and I've spent much of the last two hours researching it. However, all I've turned up is how to turn on/off tabs in 22H2. Nothing regarding the scaling issue we're having.

My hardware is officially supported, as I'm running an 8th gen Intel Core i7 (i7-8550U) on my Dell XPS 13 9370 laptop. So, as you're using an older CPU than I am, I'm not sure if that has anything to do with the bug in question.

I'm using this machine as a beta tester for new Windows features so that I don't bug up my gaming rig.

I'm glad to see tabbed File Explorer finally coming to Windows, as it's been a feature that I've long been accustomed to in both MacOS and Linux. However, I'd like to be able to see the menus in the UI 😅

Maybe we are the only 2 people who have this issue? :) lol

Did you report the issue in the Feedback app?
It may be an issue that affects a small number of PCs on this build.

I just reported it to Feedback, admittedly working full-time just now had the time.

I don't know if this would fix the issue, but I wonder if it has anything to do with High DPI screens?

My XPS 13 laptop came in two variants. One with a 1080p monitor and a 4K Touchscreen monitor. I opted for the 4K version. I wonder if screen resolution could play a factor. I might drop my resolution and see if the issue persists. May I ask what screen resolution you run your machine at? Just seeing if there's any correlation.

WOW!!!

You were right :)

I just changed the screen resolution from 4K down to 1080P and finally the Tabs in file explorer appear correctly with the commend bar no longer moving down.

So I guess this means if I want to avoid this issue I can no longer run my computer in native 4K.

I wonder if this issue is with all computers running in native 4K screen resolution or only some?

Honestly the only reason I was running my computer in native 4K anyway was for movie watching. However windows does tell me 1080P is Recommended in the display settings even though I am using a 4K TV. Perhaps the onboard video card is not 4K but if that was true then how would I be able to use 4K in the settings? lol

Anyway thanks for recommending to change the screen resolution. I am pretty good with computers so I can't believe I never thought of trying this after dealing with this issue for like the last 2 months or so :( lol

I just tried it on my end as well. Dropping the resolution from 4K to 1080p seems to resolve the issue, or at least mitigates it.

Like you, I kind of hate that I can't take advantage of 4K right now, but maybe with an update patch or two, it will be resolved. I might see if it works in 1440p or any other resolution higher than 1080p.

I certainly hope it gets patched down the road 😅

Well don't worry about not coming to it after two months. Sometimes it just helps to bounce thoughts and ideas off other people. I'll respond to this post once I know if resolutions above 1080p will work as well. Would be nice if I could run at least 2K, lol

Okay, so I played around a bit with my screen resolution and scaling on my XPS 13's monitor.

The highest resolution that I found on my hardware that will work is 2048 x 1152 @ 150% Scale.

I can get it to work on 4K with 250% Scale; however, my screen's default recommendation is 4K @ 300% scale. The 300% scale is where the tab and menu scaling issue hits on my laptop. However, as this is a 13" screen my laptop, the 250% scale @ 4K is just too small overall for my eyes. (I'm quite myopic and have a strong prescription in my glasses.)

So 1080p @ 150% Scaling and 2048 x 1152 @ 150% Scaling seem to be the most serviceable options on my hardware.

I hope Microsoft resolves this in Windows 11 for High DPI monitors moving forward, as my desktops are both on a 4K monitor by default, and I'd like to not have this issue on my gaming rigs. (Granted one rig is extremely close to becoming a Linux machine right now, but I digress.)

On a personal note, while I like this laptop, if I had this laptop purchase to do over again, I'd have opted for the 1080p version of the XPS 13 over the 4K version. In retrospect, this is not the first display issue I've had on account of a High DPI screen on this particular machine.

More good news!!!

Microsoft has finally fixed this issue in the just released Windows 11 Beta and Dev builds.

I installed Windows 11 Dev build 25163 and when running Windows in 4K resolution the command bar in file explorer does not push down and become hidden any longer.

Here was the Bug fix from the release notes.

"Fixed an issue where the tab row might unexpectedly expand vertically, covering the command bar contents."

That's great news to hear. I just downloaded that update a few minutes ago. I changed my laptop's screen resolution back to 4K yet.

I'm not sure if I'll run it at 4K. A lot of the other high DPI issues I've had with my XPS 13's monitor do work a bit better at 2048 x 1152.

But that reassures me for when this update hits the release channel and I download 22H2 on my desktops. :)
