I'm confused, Isn't windows defender part of windows for years , is free , and has been considered as good as any protection there is? Now we have to pay for it, and pay for Office which I dont need or want? Am I way off base here? Maybe I don't understand what's happening here. Thanks.

On what info is your question based? MS Defender is still free. Office products are not.

oldschool is correct -
- Windows Defender is part of Windows and does not require any additional payment. No legitimate demand for payment can possibly appear.
- MSOffice, if you want it at all, must be paid for ...

... Unless you have an MSOffice trial version.
... If you have an MSOffice trial version that has expired then it will start nagging you to subscribe to MSOffice365. You can do so or you can uninstall the MSOffice trial version.
... I use MSOffice but many other people are satisfied with free alternatives such as LibreOffice. I've some useful links for that if you are interested.

All the best,
Denis

The OP's confusion might be the fact that the 'new' Microsoft 365 subscription service now includes a "Microsoft Defender App" in addition to the traditional Microsoft Office etc. offering. which is different to the built-in Windows Defender. See this explanation: Microsoft Defender
