This started about two weeks ago playing a game fullscreen. The windows key stopped working as a shortcut to minimize the game and interact with a word doc on the desktop. I updated the system and the problem went away until 8 days later the problem came back. While troubleshooting, I noticed that after the windows key stopped, if I closed the game, it would still not work for a few seconds on the desktop. Same problem with a different game. If I minimize the game too often then windows key stops working all together even after the game is shut down. Restart fixes it for the desktop functioning but not in-game.

I turned off Logitech and G-hub on start up. Same problem. I swapped out keyboards. Same problem. I used this keyboard on my older rig and window key works in-game.

I reinstalled keyboard drivers. Filter keys are off. Win 11 game mode is off. Keyboard game mode toggle is off.

The computer is about 7 weeks old and has the same apps I had on my older system. Nothing exotic. HP software tests pass. SFC /verifyonly passes.

Today I used a restore point: Windows version after restore point: 21H2 (build 22000.918).

Still same problem in-game.

Weird.

thanks,

Welcome to the forum. Does this occur when the game is in focus (ie your active window)? With the windows key playing such an important part in various areas of the GUI, I would hesitate to change it's function. Is there not a way in your games to set another key/combination of keys to serve your purpose within the game.

Hello,

Pressing the windows key does not minimize the full-screen (focused) game like it used to. I never set it up as a key combo, etc. in-game or for the desktop. I thought it was a feature of windows.

I have not tried the powershell command option I've read about elsewhere: Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}

Is that viable? Too risky?

Turns out that HP likes to mess with their customers. They have an OMEN Gaming Hub (that I never open and use). Turns out it runs in the background automatically and must have updated and turned on a boost setting that, you guessed it, turned of win combo keys.

wow.

At least it was an easy fix if not a headache for over a week. They never explain anywhere that the program runs without initiation. smh.
