Windows replacing newer driver with older one

I had Intel NPU driver 32.0.1003053 on my PC. Gigabyte Control Center updated it to 32.0.100.3717. Windows moved it back to the previous driver version. Then, Intel Driver & Support Assistant moved it to 32.0.100.4240, which is the newest version (Aug. 29). Windows again moved it back to the original. Why would Windows ever replace a newer driver with an older one? I rolled the latest Windows interference back to the latest from Intel, so hoping this ends the problem for that particular driver. I had driver updates turned off in GPE WU settings, but recently switched it back on. Guess I need to turn it off again.

My guess is that Windows is replacing it with a WHQL certified driver.

I've seen the same thing on two Windows 10 computers recently.
It is not supposed to happen. Windows update is supposed to compare release dates of drivers but that's clearly not happening.
- I suppose Allan might be right about driver certifications.
- If Intel's later drivers have not yet been certified then Windows might skip checking their release dates.

Having Intel Driver & support running & always keeping a copy of Intel drivers makes it easy to remedy the situation but it is still aggravating & mystifying.

All the best,
Denis

I turned off Windows updating my drivers, I update them if they need it. Tinkering with the drivers is typically not necessary for most of them.
