Windows Search problems

The only other thing I can think of is a sfc /scannow, and DISM checks, but all of this is rather beyond me.
Open a admin command prompt and type:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

If it says no corruption then the store is fine but if it reports store it is repairable then run this command:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

This can take some time and may seem like it is stuck but it is just downloading files to do the repair.

After that is completed run this command:

SFC /scannow

After a rebuild is complete, do I then use services.msc to restart Windows Search immediately after, or I am supposed to do a reboot before then ?

Why would you stop the service?
You can rebuild the index without touching the service.

What is happening has nothing to do with your disk or ram but almost always is corruption in Windows or the index.

That is why first I would do the DISM and SFC.

Following the last post, tried re-enabling from Services.msc, and a reboot (following my fourth index rebuild). Didn't seem to have worked at first.

Changed the startup type to Automatic before reboot.

It did take a long time to happen, i.e. be able to do a search, but (for now) seems to have worked.

Although I have changed the startup type to Automatic (delayed start) ? Don't know if that is right.

Don't know if this means another index rebuild is in order ? (they are taking about six hours to do as well).

I have downloaded crystaldisk portable, I will try that, and let you know.

Thanks for bearing with me.

The failure to execute on reboot is odd.

from my Post #2:

So.. in more detail for you...
a. Get a copy of Crystal Diskinfo (portable version available too) - free.
Simply run that and look.
There's a tab on the left for each disk.
No idea how many disks there are in your PC- no specs on that.
If Crystal Diskinfo does not say 'Good' for each disk then...

b. Do a RAM check.

HP diagnostics may help:
- my Lenovos have a built-in diagnostic package separate from any installed O/S including RAM checks for example.

Start with absolute basics.

I don't have any idea how to use CrystalDIsk. In the absence of any instructions how to export a report, I've taken a screenshot:

Please let me know if any further info required with this, or further instructions, whether it will suffice ?

Depends how much you are trying to index. It can take hours or sometimes days to complete.

Read this:

As I say, it has taken six hours each time. According to settings 'Indexed 590009'.

I have done CrystalDisk, now going to try HP Hardware Diagnostics and the other steps.

You could adjust the indexing locations to reduce this amount or it may be trying to index locations not needed to be indexed.

At the link I provided I wanted to point out this part (Highlighted).
HP support Assistant has been known in the past to interfere with indexing.

You've already said you only use Defender, so that leaves, as I also indicated in my first post on this I think, the possibility of any other programs interfering.
My post also suggested other possible reasons the status of the service might be changed- though I've not (yet) seen anyone else say this had happened.

There is this thread:
- where the user finds a workaround in post #9.

Sadly too many respondents in Windows search threads just recommend 3rd party search tools, and don't address the question asked.

I use both- the right tool for the job at the right time- so Windows search only indexes my personal files, whilst the 3rd party too indexes all files including system files.

Disk is good.. seems you only have the one disk.

Indexing.. the most basic distinction is to index ALL files - including O/S files- or only personal files in certain locations.

This choice is a single click in Settings.

To set the classic search setting in Windows 11, go to Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows and select Classic under "Find my files". This mode indexes only your desktop, documents, pictures, and music folders, reducing system resource usage. You can customize included folders via the "Customize search locations"

There you should also see the search status: how many files & folders indexed, and the status of indexing.

If this shows e.g. Indexing is temporarily paused or Speed is reduced because of user activity etc... Look at your task manager. Is there significant resource usage?

What about running chkdsk /f /r /x?

Is that the correct command to check in case any hard disk errors?
Just chkdsk /r

OK, I've been busy for a while, unable to respond.

The chkdsk /f /r /x thing, I just wanted to rule out the possibility of any physical errors or bad sectors. It seems there aren't anyway, but I still don't understand why I'm not able to run that.

I ran the tests in HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows (3.1.0.0). It took over four hours. Mostly no problems. The only one was System Profile, and it said 'failed to read baseline'.

I think the culprit (when things went awry recently) is HP Support Assistant, which I removed, although I chose to keep the data on in case I re-installed. Maybe I shouldn't have. I think there is corrupt data there ? Not sure. I kept the data on in case I tried to re-install later, which I may do yet ?

I have yet to do a Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool check.

Or a SFC /scannow check.

Or DISM Scanhealth, Checkhealth, or RestoreHealth checks.

There may be component errors.

They are going to take some time later, and right now I am tired and need to get some sleep.

Thank you all for your help though. I will have to wait and see what later on today brings (i.e. whether the index thing plays up again).

Well, so far so good, although not being complacent yet. Only just returned after last night though.

Search and indexing is still working (i.e. not reported turned off, and showing up at log-in). I'll wait and see.

I haven't got around to doing an sfc /scannow, or DISM scan yet. I'll do so and let you know.

I haven't run the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool yet either (although probably no need). I would still be curious as to whether I would be able to run a chkdsk c: /r

I'll now do the DISM and SFC and keep you posted.

You can run checkdisk anytime you want to. The /r switch finds & fixes logical errors (which is what the /f switch does) PLUS it identifies bad sectors on your hd, tries to relocate the data to a good sector, updates the MFT, and marks the bad sector(s) as unusable in the future. Hard drive utilities provided by hd oem's and 3rd parties are generally more comprehensive and often more effective.

I tried recently, but for some reason I was unable to.
