windows server installation has failed (during update to last dev version)

Ciao, I'm trying to update my win11 22000.376 to 22523.1000.211210-1418.RS_PRERELEASE_CLIENTMULTI_X64FRE_IT-IT.ISO but i get the error:

windows server installation has failed

Any ideas?

Stop trying to install a pre release?

why? I would like install insider version and I would the security update

Make sure you disable any third-party antivirus as this might interfere with the upgrade process. Also run Setup with right-click and Run as Administrator. Before proceeding click on "Change how"... message to reveal that Windows Update will search for updates during install. We don't want that to avoid any driver giving a blue screen. Select the second option, No, do not use Windows Update. If your computer is compatibile with Windows 11 you may then proceed. Otherwise, go to the setup cache and delete the file C:\Windows.~WS\sources\appraiserres.dll to bypass compatibility check. You can then proceed. If you see any error again, post here.

In my test laptop (see 1st PC specs) I had upgraded from Windows 11 Insider's Preview to the Windows 11 final release version (RTM). In earlier Windows versions to do that I would have to edit the file \sources\cversion.ini in the installation USB and make both build numbers match my current version (found by running the winver command), as it is not allowed to upgrade from a preview (BETA) or release candidate (RC) version to RTM or later version. In Windows 11 all I did was delete the file C:\Windows.~WS\sources\appraiserres.dll to bypass compatibility check. Maybe this did the trick and I was allowed the upgrade. Try that if you see any error, even if your computer is compatible with Windows 11.

Looks like you cannot upgrade. You can backup your data and try doing a clean install.

Just a thought... Have you enabled Developers mode? Maybe it will let you upgrade.

If your Microsoft account is blacklisted create a new one or use a local account instead.

In any case, if you cannot upgrade to the build you want, you must backup your data and do a clean installation instead (format). Maybe Developer mode must be enabled before letting you install a Dev build. Haven't tried, so I don't know. Or maybe a Dev build cannot be installed on top of a release build, it requires a clean installation. In Ubuntu for example, you cannot upgrade a standard version with a LTS version or vice versa, unless you modify some specific files changing the current version. Maybe in Windows 11 you have to modify some specific Registry keys, I don't know which, before upgrading to a Dev build.
