Windows Update Failure (KB5072033)

i have a clients pc that is stuck on this windows update
i have tried various things of stopping and restarting the update service
ive manually downloaded the update but that didnt work
I then chose the reinstall now option within windows update to try and repair itself and after trying i got a 0x80070005 access denied error (I think)
not sure what else to try as it will not update windows any further

I am wondering whether it has any baring on a weird issue the client had wherby his hp envy printer suddenly stopped printing in colour after changing the cartridge. I have fixed this now but its very random

First thing I’d try is the Windows Repair Install but disconnect the internet and deselect check for updates (during the process)

P.S.

You’ll need to download the latest ISO, mount and run setup execute in File explorer if you want to run repair offline - Option Two (of repair tutorial)
Alternatively, stay connected to the internet and just disable check for updates - Option One

I have the same issue: KB5072033 fails repeatedly, with various error codes. At the same time, Update history shows that it is installed. But, the build versions do not match - the About screen shows OS build 26200.7171, whereas this update should bring me to 26200.7462.

I tried several things and finally I found that CBS.log contains the line: Identifier: KB5072033 [HRESULT = 0x800f0991 - PSFX_E_MISSING_PAYLOAD_FILE]2026-01-17 18:34:39, Error CBS Failed to perform operation. [HRESULT = 0x800f0991 - PSFX_E_MISSING_PAYLOAD_FILE]

I also tried the standalone installer, which also failed.

ChatGPT suggests In-place repair upgrade after the DISM repair using the USB that I installed Windows from (less than a month ago) failed as well. For now I am reluctant to do so and I certainly do not want to reinstall, I don't have time for that right now.

I am hoping someone has an idea for that issue. Other updates are installing just fine and the PC is working without any sign of trouble.

I've had to do several in place repair upgrades after issues with WU, it doesn't take much time and corrected the issues in each instance. Do an image backup and give it a try.

I've downloaded the win iso from media creation tool.
I then mount that as a drive.

I was stuck on 11, 23H2 with countless failed updates and countless rollbacks. I could not find the cause and I tried all the advice and searched through countless update logs. Then I happened on the Defender Driver Blocklist. This was "on" and listed outdated and unused drivers. I switched off the blocklist BUT, as the new update was downloading (long job), I cleared the culprit apps and some drivers (they are in c:\Windows\System32\Drivers - you might have windows on a different drive than c:). But, be careful and don't blame me. And, lo and behold, instead of reaching 75% and crashing, it restarted and completed the update to 25H2. Months and months it had taken following all the online tricks I could find. But the USB drivers were now corrupt (due to the countless rollbacks). Running the downloaded ISO from within Windows (no mount needed) gives you the option to reinstall windows while keeping your files and apps (answers the previous question). Bingo - it's all hunky dory now. Co-pilot was invaluable.
It is worth checking this and seeing if you are affected by this.

Click on the Windows.iso file and then start setup.exe. You should then (eventually) get the option to keep files and apps - after all the preliminaries. You only need to mount it if you are going to use it as a standalone instance of Windows (eg, booting from a USB) or for subsequent installation. I don''t think you get the option to keep apps through the mounted Windows (ex iso).
