Post #3 said everything that needs to be said - stop WU from installing hardware drivers.
Do them yourself instead.

I have seen examples of WU installing older drivers recently so I've used that tutorial to stop it on all my computers.

Is it that buggy 2020 driver that Windows keeps pushing for some reason - the one that makes screens go black and crash? I've had that issue too. Eventually managed to keep the later intel driver to stay installed, by waiting for Windows to put the 2020 driver back again and then doing "roll back driver" (a tip from @Bree) and then the Intel driver stays installed. Although on one machine "roll back driver" is greyed out so I just have to keep replacing the driver!

As said in many posts, to stop Windows Update installing a specific driver or other update, you must hide it (block it) using either Windows Update Show/Hide Tool or Windows Automatic Updates Manager (WAU Manager). Both are available from Major Geeks. No matter the Microsoft claim the Show/Hide Tool works only in old Windows 10 versions, I have successfully used it in Windows 10 22H2 and all Windows 11 versions. In the rare case it doesn't work, I use WAU Manager instead. So I block driver updates once and for all and never have to deal with them again, unless a newer version is released, hardly possible for old hardware.

All those posts have it wrong, as you don't need to download anything. For a permanent solution, all you really need is Notepad and the skill to copy-paste and save as a .bat file (see my post #22 above).

No doubt your method works, but it's easier for a non-experienced user to just let w utility do it for him.

Generally-speaking, it means that the previous driver no longer exists to be rolled-back to.

Thank you - so that means the driver I installed was actually removed, when Windows reinstalled the one I didn't want. No longer there to be rolled back. It did work on one computer - not another!

Am bookmarking this thread though - because some very helpful info about stopping the driver installing in the first place

If the option to roll back driver is grayed-out, one of the following applies:

Your computer has not had a previous driver installed for that device.
Your computer did not retain the driver files from the original version installed.

so I added group policy editor - set it up to ban Windows from molesting my machine for drivers

went back on to Intel site to get the latest WHQL driver - installed and rebooted as asked - double checked to see the correct new one was showing in device manager

checked to find window update folder has the Microsoft's gibberish driver version they and HP so love still there

checked windows update to find its ALREADY installing the 2023 old outdated insecure driver !!!

rebooted it - then uninstalled their graphic driver AGAIN - and deleted windows update folder

reinstalled the new intel driver

checked a week later

and Microsoft have reinstalled the out of date junk !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I reset Windows update to clear out any in-progress updates and only then disabled WU from doing driver updates.

Enable or Disable Include Drivers with Windows Updates - ElevenForumTutorials [I used the Option 2 Reg file but I would imagine the Option 1 GPE method does exactly the same thing.]

I have not had any reoccurences on the 4 computers I did this on.

Windows Update tends to not obey to group policy. You must HIDE (block) the specific driver update so it will never try to install it again. Use either Microsoft's own Windows Update Show/Hide Tool or Windows Automatic Updates Manager (aka WAU Manager), both available at Major Geeks.

Mileage must vary because, respectfully, I have to disagree. GPO has been set in 4 of my machines since their day 1. Gone through many updates and upgrades. No drivers have been applied. Not saying it can't happen. Just that it has never happened for me.

Instead of blocking all driver updates or blocking Windows Update entirely (not recommended), you can just block specific driver updates (or specific updates in general) and never have to deal with them again.

Ive been trying to stop windows update update drivers by itself, I tried stop services, tried ExcludeWU & Driversearching DWORDS in like 6 different path registry, no luck, it kept updating my drivers whenever connects internet...

I tried system setting option, i tried microsoft built in showhide tool, i tried few third party apps. BUT NO! After some time pass, some how the horrific windows update managed its way to update my display driver like there is no tomorrow

If it helps for me the best choice was blocking driver update for spesific device using device ID trick. Made some registry entry with too many numbers and letters. Not gonna lie for avarage user it was complicated as heck but unless there is a big update, it works! (temporarily)

PS. unpopular opinion, you can't completely stop windows update LOL

You block a specific driver update, not all updates for the same hardware. You have to keep an eye at least 1-2 times a month and block any new drivers updates until the device is old enough that there are no more updates.
