Windows 11 update keeps reverting to older Intel graphics driver

I also have a Dell laptop (Inspiron 13 7373 with 8th gen i7 Intel processor) - a bit long in the tooth now. I recently manually installed the latest Intel graphics driver, and then had a lot of hassle which caused a BSOD when returning from sleep (i.e. after every time I closed the lid). It took a while to trouble shoot, but eventually I restored the latest recommended driver (as shown on the Dell page for my laptop) and return from sleep works fine. As an enthusiastic updater, who thinks the latest drivers are generally the best, especially for security reasons, I was a little disappointed that it turns out that I am better off on this laptop with an older driver.
I just offer this as a cautionary note for anyone in a situation similar to ours. As always, YMMV.
John
Hi John, you're right, latest is not always better, but that's a whole different discussion than the issue I posted in this thread. But just to add to your point: I've been a Dell XPS notebook user for many years and the sleep/hybernate feature has always been a problem in different XPS models, and no firmware updates were able to completely fix it. I never had to worry about it since I always power on and power off as needed, always disabled that feature.

It does the same on AMD graphic drivers, every new build and the driver is months out of date
Seems to be related to the OS and not to the driver then

Windows will install drivers that it knows will work on your system to get you up and running at new build/reinstall and thus get you to a stable state, they will not always be the latest, the same is true for network drivers I find.
I always let Windows do this and then disable driver updates and go to either the OEM (Dell, Asus, MSI etc) or Nvidia, Intel, AMD for the latest of what I want.
I never use any 'tools' or programs to control driver updates

You should install the new driver then run the tool, select the driver you wish to block & choose to block it. Is this what you did?
That's what I did but when I run the tool it does not show the old driver it wants to revert to. In fact it does not show any graphics driver at all

Please confirm that you are running the tool after installing the correct driver, but before checking for updates.

The title says pretty much everything: whenever I update to the latest Intel Graphics Driver, and I do so by first uninstalling currently installed driver , restarting and keep doing this until it shows the generic Microsoft driver and then installing latest Intel driver, afterwards whenever I manually check for updates, Windows Update always installs older version of Intel Graphics driver. Any fix? Thanks
To solve this, you need to install the intel graphics driver using the "zip" installer.

The exe installer tends to remove the old drivers in the system and that is why windows is downloading the old driver via windows update again for some reason.

Installing the graphics driver using zip installer will not remove the older drivers and this will prevent windows update to download the old driver again. You do not need to do anything in the registry or download any software. Just install the driver using the zip installer from intel.

Hello,

Has anyone managed to install intel ARC Graphics driver version 30.0.101.1743 without being replaced by the old intel WHQL Graphics version 30.0.101.1631 from windows update?

If I install the ARC driver without first removing the WHQL driver from WU, it causes a slew of issues with my laptop.
Images appear to be broken and stuck everywhere.
In addition, I am unable to run Intel ARC control software.

I suspect a registry mismatch between the ARC and WHQL installations.

Thank You :-)

When you do it in Device Manager, do you only do the Display Adapter part only or do you also do the audio driver in the Sound section?

Start by downloading the Latest ARC graphics from intel https://www.intel.com/content/www/u...ics-windows-dch-driver.html?wapkw=arc drivers and DDU Display Driver Uninstaller Download version 18.0.5.5 to uninstall the WHQL driver from WU or what ever driver you have currently installed, disconnect from the internet!!. check to make sure you have enabled "Re-Size BAR Support & Above 4G Decoding" in the Bios!!
Run DDU first then
Reboot with no internet connected, run the ARC installer... should now work ok.
I'm on ARC version 31.0.101.3430 for Intel® Arc™ A-Series
