Windows update keeps installing older Intel Arc graphics drivers

no 3rd party apps needed. just block an update via powershell...

yeah im taking about driver updates.. I forgot i also thought maybe i should change to windows pro version but then i read too many pro users also can't stop windows update because microsoft keep rewriting or adding new policies which eventually activate windows update

I block specific Windows updates with Microsoft Windows Update Show/Hide Tool since Windows 8 when it was first released. I never seen any update I have blocked trying to reinstall. Only newer versions of the driver which I had to also block to stop them from installing. Try that first, then judge if it is useful or not. There are also drivers that are not designed to be rolled back, for instance, Nvidia graphics drivers.

There is no need to install the PSWindowsUpdate module if you don't want to. See my post #22 for details.

The tool works, but I never use it because I simply don't need to. Windows PowerShell was all I needed to get the job done right. I fixed this issue almost a year ago. And it hasn't come back.

I wasn't replying to you, I was replying to @botus who said he tried "everything" and the driver update keeps installing. I bet he didn't try to HIDE the update as I have already suggested in more than one posts. If he doesn't try what we suggest, then he didn't try "everything".

PS: There is a joke about one friend describing to the other that he tried "everything" to get rid of his dandruff and the other simply asks "Did you try to wash your hair?" Meaning, "Did you try the obvious?"

is it not more important someone gets to the fools at Microsoft - and explains the incompetence of them removing better, later, more secure drivers without massive security issues - than it is for them to be so security focused and clever - they work against their own rules within GPE and waste time developing ways to circumnavigate their own operating system's features - so they can do the exact opposite of whats required, all in the name of security

Hi yes i did. I am not having any problem about installing feature or cumulative windows update after reg edits. I think issue here driver updates. The exludewudriver dword was working okay on windows 10 but thing is i don't know why in win 11 somehow system rewrite or maybe add new entry to update my display driver. Maybe its because a main motherboard source or maybe the driver i use currently a bit old(unsigned)...

Thankfully I solved wu auto update driver issue by finding my graphic card id and then editing some multiple entrys (i used some part of id not whole)

I wouldn't bet my life on it because, after all, anything is possible with Microsoft. But yeah. Your explanation sounds plausible to me.

It's not dandruff. Those are just flickering pixels that are caused by Window Update always messing with the graphics driver.

The display drivers i use from official hp page working flawless on my machine, same for PCI-PCI bridge and few other oem drivers but pain windows update making my display messy time to time by installing latest signed microsoft catalog driver

After i read some anonymous post for compeletely stop windows update, I GAVE UP!

Microsoft wanted to force some updates in Windows 8 claiming security reasons. Yeah right! They tried to force install the updates to make old systems throw a BSOD and force the owners to upgrade or replace their computers in order to run Windows 8. Since they didn't want to do the extra work and force only certain updates, they chose the easy solution, just force them all. However some immature driver updates were also forced screwing even new computers, not only old ones, so to fix that they decided to release the Windows Update Show/Hide Tool so advanced users could hide (block) specific updates and never install. Much like was the case in earlier Windows versions. The same Tool also works in Windows 10 and 11. In the rare cases that it throws an error and doesn't work, use WAU Manager instead.

Just because you get a screen image it doesn't mean the driver is safe and secure and all feature behave - read the release notes of the next version on - it often highlights they were full of howling bugs and security risks

and in my first post on this subject I pointed out yet more incompetence by HP - which I'll get to after the important element here.

ALL PC manufacturers like Lenovo, Dell and HP, only bother to get around to releasing Driver updates for security holes many, many months (sometimes years), after they were patched by the Manufacturer (in this case by intel).

By the time HP offer you an update on a Driver, there is often at least another two massive bugs already patched on the current Manufacturer's Drivers.

And from the first post I made on this thread - As for the Graphics driver on this HP machine, the same chipset on my niece's HP laptop was patched in May 2025 by HP - bringing a 7 month out of date driver to HP's defective spec - But on this other machine they can't be bothered to notice they did all the work - and hence only offer an ancient super risky Driver from 2023 - which is over 75 Driver updates behind the curve - so I expect Intel belived they made some postive changes in that time!

I don't agree on this because whats the point of using display which is flickering or have blurry text.. it's unusable. How risky can it be installing official hp drivers spesifically made for my system and working perfectly well.

Not only this, one of chipset driver updated by microsoft also make my battery percentage instable, i started having random shutdowns. I checked recent activities and found this, then i did revert back to the one i use from hp. Now my battery drain normal from %100 to %5 without issue. You have no idea how shocked i am that these updates making my pc sick. I am convinced they really forcing me to believe its time to replace my machine.

in 2025 using the internet in general is a risk. Even with the most updated security updates, tools, etc can't be fully utilized if the user is stupid.

which is why having as much as you can running patches for known issues is so important....

I rather have stable drivers with all device features enabled than "secure" basic drivers without any features that impair my system's performance and compatibility. As already mentioned, all you need to be safe is an updated antivirus (Windows Defender is fine) and to use common sense. Don't just click anywhere to get rid of the annoying popup window and then wonder how you got infected!

My hybrid tablet/laptop Fujitsu Stylistic Q702 (4th generation Core-i5, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, onboard Intel graphics) performance with Windows Update drivers was too low, like it was an old Pentium 4 system struggling to load Windows 10/11. After I downloaded all the official drivers directly from Fujitsu and the latest graphics driver directly from Intel, the performance was better than the same device running Windows 7. There is a reason we insist to always use OEM official drivers when applicable. One is performance, the other is compatibility and stability and the other is to get access to the full device functions, not just make it work. Yes, I know there are some models that the manufacturer doesn't provide official drivers on their site, like another 4th generation Fujitsu I clean installed Windows 11 recently. In that case, I use Speccy or Aida64 to detect the exact hardware and manually download the respective drivers where I can find them. For those I cannot find, I use Windows Update as a last resort. However I always make sure I install the latest official graphics driver directly from Intel/nVidia/AMD for best results.

PS: A slightly better alternative to Windows Update is to use a driver utility such as Snappy Driver Installer, but use that with caution as it can install a generic driver that causes incompatibility. I always use it as a last resort along with Windows Update and always install the missing drivers (green text). I avoid updating existing drivers (blue text) because replacing the chipset drivers with inappropriate ones will cause issues and even BSOD.
