I posted in my other thread I got a new xps 15 9520 and it has windows 11 pro. I set it up with a microsoft account and then created a local account. I had restarted my laptop several time. I think only once it had message of updates.


Now when I type in windows updates in search, I see a ton of windows updates. Do I download all these updates even if I don't know what they are? Many seem to be dell drivers as well but aren't the required drivers already downloaded?


The thing is when you get a new laptop, you should always download all these updates right?

You're kidding, Right?
On an install, one of the first programs I run is one that DISABLES MS UPDATES.
As a computer tech, I've taken way too many Service Calls to fix computers that were damaged or disabled by MS Updates.

I can disable updates manually, but I find running the little program to be faster and more efficient.

I have never had an issue with any Win11 update, or Dell update. These updates are released to improve performance, stability and security. You should install all of them and make a backup of the updated system.

Almost all the issues I am asked to fix are resolved by installing the updates issued.

Be aware in the time the PC was manufactured, shipped, and waiting to be bought, there would have been numerous updates released. Given these are Windows updates, yeah.... you should update.

On the other hand, if you buy into the tin-hat world, or believe in the nay-sayers who rail against updates, well... Me? Yeah, I'd update.

+1 from me in favour of installing the updates offered by Windows. The only problem I've ever had with installing drivers etc, was when I ran a third party driver updater. If you don't install the windows updates, you will be exposing your pc to malware risk.

Update. As @Dru2 said, there probably were a lot of updated between the time the OS was installed and you bought the computer.

Okay so apparently from what I am reading on another thread, do not install the update below for dell laptops? That below seem separate from all the updates above.

Okay so I went ahead and clicked install all. I then noticed the first program out of all these programs was installing this one below from the list.

It is showing 80% and installing. How do i immediately stop this install? All the other programs are showing as pending install. Is there a way to prevent this install fro m happening? Or is this install okay?

Is this a big mistake downloading this? Can i still undo it? There is a thread where people said a cumulative update to version 22h2 is not good for dell laptops and i just got the dell laptop. What am is uppose to do now? It is now installing all the other programs in the list. I did X out the last one though.

Absolutely normal for the bios to be updated, just let it do it’s thing and all will be ok

Okay. Well I never updated BIOS ever in any old laptop I ever had.


So it shows it is done.



Now when I go back to settings and windows updates, the only update it shows available now is the one I mentioned earlier at the bottom.

This is the one update separate from all the other updates. Do not download this cumulative update? There is a letter i in a blue circle next to it so this isn't a required update right? So don't update this?

You want the windows cumulative updates to install. Those are the collection of updates that Microsoft has released for your operating system that should ABSOLUTELY be installed.

I always install the latest updates on all of my boxes. I also work with thousands of servers at work and we always roll these updates out to our servers and workstations.

Um, this is not normal, not from WINDOWS UPDATES at least.

Perhaps if you are using a Dell Utility to run your updates you might be prompted to download and install a BIOS update. But if you click on Start, type WIndows Update and run that utility, you are not going to bet a BIOS update.

Is there a reason this cumulative update is different from the entire list of other updates though? This was separate. I assume its a completely new one or something?
