Solved Windows won't shut down

Hey guys

I have noticed that the last time i tried to shut down my PC (yesterday) it went into a loop.

Restart works fine.

When i try to shut down windows through the menu it goes to black screen and shutting down text and then returns me to my log in to windows screen. I have tried it multiple times and get the same result.

I had to use the shutdown /s /f /t 0 command in "run" to shut down.

Anyone know how i can fix this?

My Windows are up to date.

As a trial and error step open administrative command prompt and type: powercfg -h off

Reboot then shutdown and report findings.

That seems to fix it. Shut down works now. What did that command do? Did it fix something? Is it permanent?

it permanently disables hibernation

Since windows 10 Microsoft has changed the shutdown mode.
Simply put with Quick Start enabled (default) the Start>Shutdown command performs (a kind of) hibernation and no longer a total shutdown. In short, the system saves RAM in a file on disk (hiberfil.sys) that is reloaded at the next boot, avoiding the need to do a cold boot, which would be much longer.
If you want complete shutdown and cold boot you must disable Quick Start or Hibernate.
I have noticed that some systems do not like this new behavior

So what i basically did with that command is turn both off.

I don't care about fast shut down or fast restart as long as it starts and shuts down normally.

Considering the hibernation, i don't hibernate my PC i have it on 24 hours a day. I just lock the windows so a password is required to get access.

What i am asking is if this is the normal hibernation or if it is some kind of smart hibernation. I don't use my PC for many hours a day and don't wont to turn something off that might accelerate the deterioration of hardware parts.

The computer can be left on and enter sleep.

For desktops hibernation and Windows fast startup can both be turned off.




For computers using battery power having hibernation without windows fast startup is useful as there may be cases where hibernation prevents data loss before the battery drain.
