Word now printing #10 business envelopes with return address cut off

I have been printing envelopes in this HP 401dn for a long time now, never any issues. Until the last half-hour. Now the return address is cut off on the left side, perhaps 1/2", or say 10-12 mm for non-US friends.,

I even tried going into the ENVELOPE options, and checking the Rotate Clockwise box. Absolutely no different, and I wasted my last 4 envelopes. As mes amis Français would say, <<Merde Alors!>>

If I sound frustated at Word (or is it Windows) I am because a simple, routine task has become an issue with no obvious solution.

Have you tried reinstalling the driver? Did Windows Ready Print take over your printing? Might I suggest reusing the same envelope until you resolve the issue?

I needed to knock out these letters tonight. My wife found some more envelopes and suggested that I use those pre-printed address labels we all get in the mail. That worked. (As usual, my wife has better ideas that I do. )

Go to Settings -> Bluetooth & Devices -> Printers & Scanners. Find your printer and click to open it. Now click on Printer Properties and go to the Advanced tab. If the driver is anything else than HP, change it back to HP driver. If it is not in the list you have to download the driver again and reinstall it. If you go at HP support site, prefer the model specific driver which enables all features. Avoid the generic HP Universal PCL6 driver. After you replace the driver go to General tab and click Printing Preferences. See if the envelope has the correct dimensions and print an envelope to test.

PS: If in the drivers list you see both the HP specific model driver and HP Universal PCL6, probably Windows Update replaced your model-specific driver with the Universal without asking because it is newer. Try changing to the HP specific model driver and print an envelope. That's why I insist in other threads to avoid updating the drivers from Windows Update. Yes, it is a little more work to manually download the driver from manufacturer, but you get access to all the features and for a printer probably better print quality.

PS2: Check the minimum printing margins in Printing Preferences. If they are too large that's why the text is clipped. Set them to the minimum possible, even zero, and manage the margins from the printing application.

This is what Microsoft's replacement driver looks like. You will never know they have replaced your vendor supplied driver because they don't ask permission?
You will never notice it's been replaced unless you print something special like envelopes. This is the firs thingt all of you should look if your having printer issues.

I knew it! Same thing happened to my father. Windows Update installed the HP Universal PCL6 driver and a second instance of the printer with the Microsoft IPP driver. I downloaded the latest device-specific drivers from HP, but I cannot install them remotely because it asks for the device password printer on the sticker. I will do it next time I visit my parents' home. They are on vacations, so they cannot tell me the password. I connect to my father's computer remotely via AnyDesk to check for updates etc.

The vendors must share in the blame as they don't won't to update their drivers to the new standards. I have a fairly new Asus laptop, all the drivers are now Microsoft certified. Hopefully that means that they will have a longer life than the drivers written for Windows 10?

All 64-bit drivers, even Vista 64-bit work in Windows 11. Of course the newer the better. The known exception is Intel graphics drivers for Windows 7 64-bit that are locked by Intel and deny installing on higher versions. There are some third-party hacked versions that bypass version check and install in higher versions including Windows 11. So if there are no Windows 10/11 drivers (mostly the same) use older versions official OEM drivers. Then use a utility such as Microsoft Windows Update Show/Hide Tool or Windows Automatic Updates Manager (WAU Manager) to list the available updates and hide (block) the undesired updates. Both tools are available at Major Geeks. I prefer Microsoft's Tool but in some rare cases it might give an error that cannot download the list of updates. In that case I use WAU Manager.



PS: When Microsoft provided the Tool at their site they claimed it works only on Windows 8/8.1 and older versions of Windows 10. That's not true, I have confirmed it myself that it works in all Windows 10 and 11 versions.
