The first batch of Windows 11 computers will presumably be on sale this yearend holiday season. Would you buy one?

Pros and cons in my case:

Pros: My main desktop tower came with Windows 8.1, upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, but it cannot be upgraded to Windows 11 (4th generation i7, no TPM) I do like the 'peace of mind' benefits of TPM, especially dTPM, in light of ever growing concerns about security.

Cons: The computer runs well, and will probably still run well until 2025.

A lot of computers that can't run Windows 11... are running Windows 11 right now.

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
I had teething angst and waited until 3 years after RTM before upgrading to Windows 10. But in 20/20 hindsight, there was little reason for the teething angst, I should have upgraded right after RTM and would have enjoyed 3 more years of a better OS. Similarly, after reading many posts of Insiders, I have Windows 11 teething angst, perhaps unjustified. I am undecided. Hence, the poll I posted, I like your pros and cons, too.

I would never buy a computer on sale for the holiday season, they're invariably built down to a price, they will also in this case likely to be running a New untried OS ( though Microsoft may well only release free upgrade options for this holiday season as there are a lot of potential issues to solve by the time the OS would need to be ready for inclusion in "Holiday Sales" )

If I had to purchase a new device I would explicitly state that it would ship with Windows 10 Pro, (Never "Home" ) but would be Windows 11 "Ready", (which of course all PCs shipped in the last few years should already be anyway

The first batch of 'Windows 11 ready' computers (although they didn't know it at the time) were built several years ago, when Intel 8th gen or later processors and TPM 2.0 started to become commonplace. I've already started looking at the prices of used laptops from that era with a view to buying. So yes, I suppose I would ;)

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

As far as I am aware there is no such official term as 'Windows 11 Certified'. All OEMs, including Microsoft themselves only say their current machines come with a 'free upgrade to Windows 11'.

The term 'Windows 11 ready' has no official meaning either, but is increasingly seen on retailers' websites - it's just a 'marketing' ploy.

I never buy an off the shelf item, so certification would need to be performed on each component individually as I specify them, It would be extremely unlikely that anything I specified would not be certified eventually but this takes time to do properly so would delay build and dispatch

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
One other thing to be aware of is that the device specs to run the current Windows 11 insider builds, are less strict than the original stated requirements, these may or may not be changed at the release of the OS

I would likely build my own new PC rather than buying one off of the shelve. Having built them in the past I know how to do it and I feel confident in building a PC, desktop. For me there's no need to buy one someone else slapped together.

Jeff, I always used to build my own, but I worked for a long time in the industry specifying and often building systems for Industrial customers. Truth is I always enjoyed the specification phase more than the build, so have lately been speccing what I want and letting the specialist PC building companies do the build. Of course I still add Hard drives and specialist PCIe cards myself which keeps the cost down a little

I enjoy specking them out also.. but for some reason I like putting them together. Where I live there aren't any shops to go to that would build mine and I would have to make a long drive to get to one. My previous guy only charged 80 bucks to get the job done and that was a great deal but he's closed.

For me since my new build would be a rather basic PC it's not hard to put it together plus I have two helpers to get it done.. Milo and Phoebe love to supervise. LOL 🐱

Pros and cons in my case:

Pros: My main desktop tower came with Windows 8.1, upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, but it cannot be upgraded to Windows 11 (4th generation i7, no TPM) I do like the 'peace of mind' benefits of TPM, especially dTPM, in light of ever growing concerns about security.

Cons: The computer runs well, and will probably still run well until 2025.

I use to go to the local computer shows. I would spec out what I wanted and they would build it while I waited. Now the closest is in Laurel Maryland. What I do now is buy the custom built desktops from Micro Center.
