Windows 11
Hi all,
I'm running Windows 11 and I tried to install WSL. Everything seemed to be going well until I got this message"
WslRegisterDistribution failed with error: 0x80370102
When I try to run Ubuntu, I get the following:
Error: 0x80370102 The virtual machine could not be started because a required feature is not installed.

What required feature am I supposed to have installed? I looked at WSL posts on this forum but didn't see anything resembling my problem.

Regards,
Buster20

Did you happen to enable the Windows Subsystem for Linux using the Microsoft Store? I tried that last night and ran into this exact issue.

Go to Start, Windows Features and tick the box for WIndows Subsystem for Linux and Virtual Machine Platform. Restart the computer. Then try your Ubuntu install again...I bet it works this time.

WSL will install the Ubuntu distribution by default using the wsl --install command.
When I used that command, it didn't work. The command I used installed ubuntu but when I clicked on the ubuntu icon, I got the message you see in the op. It seems that there's "required feature" that isn't installed. I tried 'wsl update' and it updated but ubuntu still gives me the same error message. Weird.

If you prefer to enable the features via the command line then launch an elevated prompt of your choice (for example, Command Prompt) and enter the following commands:

Code:
dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:Microsoft-Windows-Subsystem-Linux /all /norestart

dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:VirtualMachinePlatform /all /norestart

Once these commands have completed, reboot your machine and you will be ready to install the Linux kernel.

Yes, I went to the store and tried it that way, but I haven't tried your other suggestion. Will do.
If you prefer to enable the features via the command line then launch an elevated prompt of your choice (for example, Command Prompt) and enter the following commands:

Code:
dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:Microsoft-Windows-Subsystem-Linux /all /norestart

Once these commands have completed, reboot your machine and you will be ready to install the Linux kernel.
Tried that but it didn't work, I still get the following message:
Error: 0x80370102 The virtual machine could not be started because a required feature is not installed.
Could it be that the VM isn't loading, or isn't installed?

BINGO! I was reading some article at the MS Windows KB site and happened to fall upon that solution, activating SVM in the UEFI settings, and it worked. Thank you everyone, especially FreeBooter and LeLibran who also hit upon the solution. WSL Ubuntu is now working.
We are glad to know problem resolved!

Hi. New on the Forum. Just wanted to say, thanks for this thread - I had the same problem as Buster20. Decided to upgrade to W11 because of WSL, seemed more convenient than running my previous dual boot W10/Linux system (or running Linux in standalonne VM software). I have a habit of disabling anything in the BIOS that isn't rquired for the current use of my PCs, and forgot about having disabled Virtualization Technology!
