"You are 78% there" malware hijack - solved, but from where did it come?

Today on my laptop I was working, and all of a sudden the screen went black and the display looked like it would during a standard Windows update (though no relevant updates were pushed to my computer today, and I'd not done anything to launch this), until the screen showed this:

The QR code took me to a link for https://enterthecode.msupdateservice.info/qr/[deleted] and instructions that I needed the Microsoft Authenticator app - which I have, and I could tell that link looked suspicious.

Tried restarting the computer, and I could log into my local user account, but in less than a minute, the "updating ... you are 78% there" nonsense resumed.

I have a different local user account on the computer, that is just for servicing and I rarely use, and logging into that, I could do whatever I wanted to.

Ran malwarebytes from that account, and it found six issues and quarantined them.

Restarted the computer, logged into my "real" account, and the same "78%" thing was there in less than a minute.

I finally fixed things by starting in safe mode, logging into the affected account, and from task manager, disabling all the programs that automatically start. Ran malwarebytes again, it found more things and quarantined them, and the computer has been fine since.

But my questions are:
  1. What was the specific piece of malware causing this
  2. From where did it come (I am a stickler for safe computing, and it's been many years since I've had any malware on any computer of mine)
  3. Could stuff I did in Browser tab, then computer, crash, from EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION_READ have introduced the malware? Everything I tried was from a respected authority, who was helping me in that thread

This does not look like Windows. I've not seen a QR code on an update. It looks suspiciously like a backdrop curtain used when a scammer has been allowed to remote in to "fix" a problem and he downloaded a remote application that loads whenever Windows loads. The backdrop is used to hide the scammer's activity.

My advice: You'll never chase this down. Disconnect from Internet immediately (unplug router), restart computer, Ctrl-Alt-Delete to Task Manager, try to shut down the process responsible, toggle off the Wifi on the computer, copy off the personal data, wipe the drive, reinstall Windows and remove any remaining partitions at the screen where you choose the location to install Windows.

    I use this laptop mainly from my recliner. It's purpose is scheduling computer and TV services, closing TV work orders, remote customer support, research and recreation.

    Printers in the office room on my main floor were both acquired from business customers who upgraded equipment, had me handle the upgrade and then haul away the replaced hardware. I have not purchased a printer for myself in 15 years.

    Main: HP LaserJet P3010 (black & white, hardwired, networked)
    Aux: HP Color LaserJet MFP M281fdw (color laser, fax, hardwired, networked)

    Internet in my house is routed through a TP-Link AC3200 with radios disabled. Wireless access points are two (2) strategically-located UniFi UAP-AC-PRO ceiling units which cover my whole house including basement and front/back yards. Netgear gigabit switches and CAT6 cabling are used for wired purposes.

    This computer was acquired from a customer who cleaned out her office. I upgraded it and now use it in my downstairs computer-repair office.

    My home office printer is an old HP LaserJet 3015. I acquired this after a customer passed away and his wife sold their house and downsized. She gave me all his equipment. I still help her with her tech issues.

Thanks. Not that I like my picture online in any form, ha ha. Yes, it's a reflection, and when I saw how dusty my screen was after taking the picture, I cleaned the screen, so there's not that "snow" distortion seen anymore.

https://www.joesandbox.com/analysis/1877869/0/html describes the thing that was on my computer. I remember seeing something about "pdf" in a startup process that I stopped in safe mode, and that malwarebytes removed. No idea how it got onto my computer.

As I understand it, the threat to one's computer comes when someone goes to the web site as directed by the QR code. My phone flagged that address as suspicious, so I never went to that site.

I'm not on that computer any more today, but I used it without incident after disabling the suspicious startup items while in safe mode, then running malwarebytes. I could be wrong of course, but I think I'm set.

Still wondering how it got onto my computer, and if it could have come about from steps I took in the post to which I linked at the start of the thread.

There are many ways to get infected.

If you want a 3rd opinion use the ESET Online Scanner

No. It's a backdrop curtain. I missed the part where he said he thinks he fixed it by stopping startup processes using another account. That screen is not real. This QR code and number does not appear when Windows finishes updates. The dotted circle is supposed to be where the 014-271 number appears. The percentage thing is supposed to be lower. There never has been a "paused" message with a QR code to continue. This was some kind of scam.

He seems to have fixed it but I still would not trust it. A few years ago, a customer got tricked into allowing a "tech support" person to remote into her computer and she sent me a picture of the screen that appeared the next day. Similar but was not as realistic as this one. I went to her house and found the autostart - the trigger was in Task Scheduler (at login) and that showed me where the exe was. It was in one of the user's App Data Temp directories. I still didn't trust that it was secure so I wiped and reinstalled. And gave her a friendly scolding for allowing somene other than me to remote in.

Fortunately, I've never allowed someone to remotely access my computer.

That's what I figured. It's likely to remain a mystery how the malware got on my computer, but at least I have a reminder to be even more careful than the "perfectly careful" I thought I'd been.

😄 What are you on about. Either get a better monitor or buy glasses, it’s an obvious reflection of the OP holding a camera at the monitor.

That's a new one on me. Windows asking for QR codes for updates? Scary. Also doubtful. I would follow sgayres advice in this instance, stripping personal data first, reformatting the drive, and then opting for a complete re-install. Sure. You may have it "fixed" for now but your OS is likely compromised. At least run Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth. You may also wish to check with ASUS to verify if you're running the latest BIOS for your system.

I see the reflection and the dirt. The screen being displayed is not real. It's an image. A jpg probably in the same location where the exe was. I know what I'm talking about.

To put it another way, what @sgayres is saying is that black screen with the QR code is like a window on top of all other windows, so someone could be doing something behind that, which you would not see. I don’t know if that’s the case or not, but I think that’s what they’re suggesting.

Exactly. From what the OP describes and from what I've been reading. the scam is not someone accessing remotely. The scam lies where the QR code points and that code number. Following through with instructions may do anything INCLUDING give someone access like a program similar to AeroAdmin or even Microsoft Quick Access.

    I use this laptop mainly from my recliner. It's purpose is scheduling computer and TV services, closing TV work orders, remote customer support, research and recreation.

    Printers in the office room on my main floor were both acquired from business customers who upgraded equipment, had me handle the upgrade and then haul away the replaced hardware. I have not purchased a printer for myself in 15 years.

    Aux: HP Color LaserJet MFP M281fdw (color laser, fax, hardwired, networked)

    Internet in my house is routed through a TP-Link AC3200 with radios disabled. Wireless access points are two (2) strategically-located UniFi UAP-AC-PRO ceiling units which cover my whole house including basement and front/back yards. Netgear gigabit switches and CAT6 cabling are used for wired purposes.

    This computer was acquired from a customer who cleaned out her office. I upgraded it and now use it in my downstairs computer-repair office.

    My home office printer is an old HP LaserJet 3015. I acquired this after a customer passed away and his wife sold their house and downsized. She gave me all his equipment. I still help her with her tech issues.
