I'd use Defender too, as long as it doesn't block any unsigned programs that I want to install.

As for AV, there is detection, performance, GUI, manageability, compatibility, cost.
I have chosen performance, the ability to add exceptions and to shut up Security Center.

I have tried a few other AVs in the past, and have returned to Windows Defender/Microsoft Security each time. It ranks up there with the other brands now in terms of effectiveness, and uses less, if not the same, amount of resources. I also have MBAM free that I run occasionally just for assurance.
