2.5ghz Networking Query


Cat5e is supposed to be good for 2.5Gbps at maximum length, I'm only going around 6 feet for each computer to the switch. However, the real issue appears to be that I can't get the NIC's in these two machines past 1Gbps.

FWIW my motherboard Realtek PCIe 2.5GbE is using the default MS provided Realtek driver dated 5/11/2021. File version 10.050.0511.2021 and working fine. I am using a higher level ethernet cable directly to my 2.5 Gb switch which is connected to a 2.5 Gb link to my main router.
I am wondering however I used to see references on networking speeds and that the network would slow down to the lowest level device. I am not sure I ever got a full grasp of what was being suggested but always wondered. I'd be curious if you disconnected the ethernet link(1 gig) from the main router to the 2.5 Gb switch and see if the devices might connect at the higher 2.5 gig speeds.

How about a shot of what the Advanced properties of the adapter look like? I'm curious if it has the speed setting that I found on-line earlier that mine doesn't have.

Pretty sure you want a cat6a or better cable. cat5e is 1Gbps max. Cat7 cables are the same price so I would just go with a 7

Multiple references say that a CAT5e cable should do 2.5G. In any case, I can't imagine that there would be no clue about the 2.5G capability without a CAB6 cable. I will allow that it might now work well, I just want to see if it works at all.

Probably not, but if I can get the adapters thinking 2.5G, I'm perfectly happy to get new cables.

Too many things you could be asking about. What specifically are you looking for?

And for others as mentioned CAT5E will work. I wired my home with CAT5E about 20 years ago. Upstairs and downstairs so not so easy to rerun. I have several 2.5gig switches connected to the CAT5E cables and seeing 2.5g connects to the devices that do support higher than 1 gig.

I am looking for a shot of the advanced properties to see if you are seeing the entry Max Support Speed. I see nothing in mine that indicates the driver knows anything about 2.5G, so I'm trying to see if that's the missing link.

Ah yeah that. I initially looked at mine with the discussion of the EEE settings. Mine was actually set to "1.0 Gbps Full Duplex" but I changed mine to "2.5 Gbps Full Duplex". But that was before noticing my Advanced EEE setting was "Disabled." So if Disabled those other setting don't matter.

Sorry did not see anything in your original post indicating a "hardware issue". And just because a NIC card doesn't reach full speeds does not mean hardware issue as explained above.
