I'd like to set up 2 Monitors, one with Remote Desktop and one with the regular screen for my work. What do I need to do this?

I may be wrong, but I do not think you can do that. IME remote desktop basically logs you off and takes over the desktop and computer.

I can resize the remote desktop to any size, so I should be able to move it over to the 2nd monitor

Are you wanting to control another computer and see that remote computer’s screen on your 2nd display, or are you wanting to let another computer control yours but only see the 2nd display?

I want to see and control my downstairs computer with remote desktop on a 2nd monitor. I remember years ago I set up 2 monitors and could basically drag things from 1 monitor to the next. It was likely Win 8. If I can do this with Win 11, then I can resize my remote desktop window and drag it to the 2nd monitor

My Win 11 computer has 2 video ports - HDMI and DP 1.4. So I ordered a HDMI to VGA adapter for 1 monitor and a DP 1.4 to HDMI adapter for the other monitor. The link further explains what I need to do with Remote Desktop.- Excellent advice.

I use AnyDesk but free version has a limit, I think 30 hours per month, so I also use RustDesk to remotely control my home computer from work. You can install either utility or both and then open the remote computer, move the window on the second screen and maximize it or make it full screen. Use the local computer on the first screen. I have done it. If both computers are on the same network you can also use VNC, I used RealVNC. VNC connects using the IP address, so it is tricky to use through the internet, but within the same network is very good.

I got my 2 adapters and I'm able to duplicate the display on both monitors, but I can't drag anything to my 2nd monitor . It does show the task bar but the desktop is blank., In display settings, When I choose "extend" I still can't drag anything to the desktop for monitor 2.

My Win 11 computer has 2 video ports - HDMI and DP 1.4. I have an adapter plugged into the DP 1.4 port and my HDMI cable for my main monitor plugged into that adapter. In the 2nd video port which is HDMI. I have my other adapter plugged into the HDMI port of the Win 11 computer and my VGA cable is plugged into the VGA end of that adapter. This goes to monitor #2. In Win 11 display settings, if I choose detect monitor, I get a message saying it didn't find another display, yeet I stil can duplicate.

I've read that I could get an HDMI splitter cable that splits the HDMI into 2 ports. IS that the only way to get this to work?

I have a laptop with a 1366x786 display, and my TV connected to its HDMI port as a second 1920x1080 display. With 'extend these displays' selected in System > Display I can drag anything I want to the 2nd display, including an RDP session.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

@GerryPeters Click the Identify button shown in Bree’s screenshot, and make sure your monitors are where you expect them to be. Sometimes the monitor you have placed physically on the left is located logically on the right in Windows. It’s a fun little game they like to play, like orienting USB cables correctly.

I see 1 and 2 on the correct monitors. I just can't drag anything from monitor 1 to monitor 2.

Make sure you have selected 'Extend these displays'. Click on 'Multiple displays' to expand it and make sure 'Ease cursor movements between displays' it ticked.

If all else fails, try dragging to the left instead of to the right, just in case the monitors are not the way round you think they are :wink:

thanks, Bree, dragging to the right worked. My 2nd monitor is on the left, so that's what confused me. Now I just need to get used to it. The 2nd monitor keeps going black and then coming back on. I'll experiment more mostly tomorrow and let you know how it goes - thanks

I still get a message saying it didn't find another display, when I click on Detect. Is that why it goes black sometimes?

So do I, it's looking for any display it hasn't already detected. It already knows about your two monitors, so they don't count.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I was hoping on reboot and double checking my Remote Desktop settings that the disappearing screen on my 2nd monitor would go away. It hasn't and happens every few seconds and has nothing to do with remote desktop.

I now have remote desktop closed and just dragging file explorer windows does the disappearing. I'll try having the VGA plug into the DP 1.4 port instead of the HDMI port and see if that helps. My 2nd monitor is an old Acer VGA. Any clues to fixing this?

Check the HDMI to VGA adapter or replace the VGA cable. Some old VGA cables might not have good signal if twisted or bend. The symptom without adapter is imperfect dirty looking or fuzzy picture. Using an adapter might lose signal, like in your case. I connect my primary monitor with a DP to VGA adapter and my second monitor with HDMI.

I changed it to a different VGA cable - no difference. Then I used the adapter to be able to plug the VGA into the DP 1.4 port, for some reason that didn't work well. Not sure why it goes black, losing the picture.
