Windows 11 Home
Hello all,
I have Windows 11 Home edition and I need to use Remote Desktop. When grid power goes down after storms, our home switches to solar/battery. The battery is a large lithium unit and it has what's called a Battery Management System. I connect my laptop to it, then use various devices around the home to connect to the laptop to view the battery status information no matter where I'm at on the property. This is all on a private home network.. Not something I do when I leave the house.

With Windows 8, this was a simple matter of bringing up the Remote Desktop program.. it's enabled on the basement computer so easy to connect to it. But my new Window's 11 Home edition doesn't have Remote Desktop. A quick search and I was able to download a Microsoft app and get access to the basement computer. That worked only for a short time and now that stupid app wants me to make a purchase. WTF? I suspect this will be my last copy of Windows and I'll be switching to Linux when we upgrade computers again in the future. I'm tired of all the spyware garbage MS puts into their software.

Anyhow.. (sorry about the rant). Does anyone have a recommendation that will allow me to use my Windows 11 Home PC to connect to the Windows 10 laptop in the basement? I tried installing RDPWrapper but it's not working.. The program loads then pops up an error..

it is possible, but i cant say if i would do this or not... just because its 2026 and unknown files... yeah..

you could also just get a cheap Pro key and upgrade the pc from stacksocial. it will activate.. but is probably a kms or other key that won't activate more than once... (i have personally gotten 1 out of 20 office 2019 keys that did not activate and they gave me a new one within 24hr, so i know their support is good)

As dacrone pointed out, Remote desktop is a Windows Pro+ only feature. Let me add some nuance to that: You can connect to a system running Home edition, but to initiate the connection requires Pro. So, the only system needing to be upgraded to pro are those systems from which you want to initiate the connection.

Note that there are other options. For example, there are a number of "VNC" clints / servers available. Some are free, some are not. But they will allow you to do basically the same thing as remote desktop, in fact, even better in some ways because you can connect to the actual console session.

Just search the web for something like "VNC software" and I'm sure you will find a number of options.
