22635.3646 Fails to install on 2 computers

I am in the Insider/beta program, and all has gone well until this week - when 22635.3646 won't install on either computer running 2263.3640 from last week.

It has failed several times. The last time - I Powered down, started up Windows. It was on Downloading, but quickly went to installing - must have been using a previously downloaded version. It said pending restart, I clicked the restart button. The black screen got to 30%, then it restarted again. It then said "Preparing Automatic Repairs", then "Diagnosing your PC", then "Attempting Repairs", then it said "Something didn't go as planned, don't worry we are undoing the changes." It then reboots to my current ver of Windows 22635.3640.

So I tried using the UUP Dump/iso download to install on one of the computers, that failed too. It said 0xC1900101 - 0x20017, "The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation." That appears to be about an incompatible driver, I didn't see any changes related to that in the .3636 release notes. Nor, has anything changed in the hardware/software configuration of either computer in a long time.

I posted feedback on the Insider Feedback hub about the problem.

Do you have any suggestions of things to try, or should I just wait until the next release?

Same here. Not installing with error. Will try UUP Dump and get back to you.

I bet UUP Dump won't work either - it didn't for me. @BrianInEngland @mecanicogolf if you could use the feedback hub to post a problem, the more we have maybe it gets fixed sooner vs. later!

It worked! I am now the proud owner of Win 11 PV 24H2 on my PC and so far seems to be running just fine. Need to run it for a while. And I'm unsupported CPU 7th Gen. Intel.

This is not the current version of BETA????? What does this mean?

I tried it again this morning - same failure. It always goes through download, install, pending restart which I click to restart, the black screen advances to 30%, it pauses for a few sections there, does what looks to be a quick restart and starts Automatic Repair. I guess this release is just broken for some folks.

At least in this case, there’s no risk. It rolled it back very nicely. Everything I checked and verified looked perfect. It just can’t go from 3640 to 3646.

I could not either. Installing with UUP Dump download.

If you're talking about Rufus, none. My unsupported PC has everything but the CPU that's a 7th Gen and the only workaround I need is the MoSetup tweak, which by the way, come with this ISO. That's the first thing I always check.

Read this: How to Fix the Installation Error 0xC1900101 - 0x20017?

It sounds like it could be a storage problem. Check and make sure you have enough storage and read this article.

@mecanicogolf thanks - I have 170GB of storage space available. I looked at the log in \Windows\Panther, no evidence of a bad driver. I was thinking about trying in clean boot state...
