8TB WD HDD very noisy, is this normal?

I recently added a Western Digital WD80EAAZ-00BXBB0. That's an 8TB Blue HDD.

When I run the S.M.A.R.T. (quick) test with the WD Data Lifeguard Tool for the first several seconds it sounds like someone shoved a vibrator inside my PC and turned it on high. Then it gets a lot quieter but I can still hear a humming noise for several more seconds. It does pass all the tests.

I've used WD for many years and never heard one make this noise. Is this normal, has anyone else experienced this?

Note: The HDD's are held in with 4 screws each, no quick mounting.

Yeah that's probably normal.
That 8TB drive is 5640rpm and is pretty bottom of the line.

I remember working on a Data General system back in the 1980's that had a -- wait for it -- removable 8" hard disk pack with about 120MB of capacity. The gol-darned thing sounded like the opening of Pink Floyd's Money when it started chunking away.
By comparison, your drive is quiet. But yes, as such things go, the higher the RPMs on an HDD, the quieter is usually is. When they start "chunking" for real, it usually presages catastrophic disk failure.

Ah, yes. Those were fun days. I started with a single floppy drive, then got a second one and thought that was the best - no need to swap the disk 20 times to make a copy. Got my first HDD as a hand me down from a friend - a whole 20MB I believe it was (may have even been 10).

Then there were the trips to the computer shows to pick up new hardware.

Fun times!

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

Remember calibrating these things in the 70's. Take off your watch as the voice coil would bugger it up!

During testing it will make the most noise, so not unexpected.

I have some WD red drives in a couple of NAS boxes the noise difference is very noticeable, despite only around 3-4 dBA difference listed in the data sheets. They do SMART tests to a schedule.

The mounting method and housing make a big difference.
Some veering to a Loudspeaker enclosure, others more of an Anechoic chamber.

6TB is too small for this application and I don't need the speed of a black, it's a media storage drive with an avg file size of 1-4 GB.

There's 2 WD 6TB HDD's right above it and neither make this noise, ever. Usually all I can hear is the cooling fans.

You don't need the speed of a Black... you need the superior quality of a Black.

The higher the RPM, the louder the drive actually is. This is pure physics. I've had drives with speeds varying between 5400 - 10000 RPM and the faster spinning has always been the loudest.

ofc there is also quality differences. My very old Maxtor drves, while not fast were very loud. Sounded like jet engines when spinning up and like a jackhammer when reading.

Doh, I only glanced at the link and misread it.

I used to use the Black series for the speed for gaming. Now all that has moved to SSD's so I just use HDD's for storage.

Also, I made a mistake earlier. The 8TB is storage for archived games and their related files, patches, mods, notes. One of the 6TB is media.

Noise from a computer or it's drives is "relative".
My comp (with 9 fans), sounds like an A/C unit. So I can't hear my WD Blacks at all. :-)


That's why I said, twice... get Crystal Disk Info, and see if it says: Good or Caution or Bad.


Tiny rubber washers between the drive and the chassis, might add some quiet to your drive.
But noise from a hard drive can also be a sign of pending failure, so you need to run CrystalDiskInfo, too.

When that happens to me, I find that lubricating with a couple shots of Captain Morgan or Old Grand-Dad helps quiet things down. :cool:

I have a 4TB WD Blue drive which is silent. Watch out for the high head load / unload cycling Western Digital Blue HDD - High Load / Unload Cycle Count

My only working solution to date has been to schedule a task to run a batch file and write a small file to the drive every 5 minutes.
