Windows 11 Pro 24H2 (RP channel)
On my main Windows install I have an Account Unknown showing in Security tab for the C: drive. It also appears on all 3 of my VirtualBox machines.
All machines are running Windows 11 22H2 with one of them on Dev channel.

The full number is the same on all PCs S-1-15-3-65536-1888955469-739942743-1668119174-2468466756-4239452838-1296943325-355587736-700089176

My PC uses one MS account, I use a different MS account for the VM installs.

I have two of them. If I remember correctly I did a repair install a while ago and then, lately, created a new Admin account and removed the original. So I assumed it's a record of this?

Any 'account unknown' is the SID of an account that does not exist on this PC. When permissions are set in the security tab they are not associated with the account's name, it is the account's SID that is stored there.

When you view permissions all known SIDs are displayed as the name of the account in question. When you delete an account this does not remove it from all the places where it has permissions. But as the system can no longer find a friendly name for the account it will now display its SID in full.

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

There are other SIDs used for permissions besides the ones for user accounts. These are called 'capability SIDs' and are there to provide permissions for applications. From what I can make out the S-1-15-3 one appears to be associated with Nvidia. Do NOT delete these from permissions else you may break your system.

I have those on the Dev partition as I mess around with it quite a bit. Nothing showing on the RTM version on the other partition as it gets a little more respect :smirk:
