Personalization Add or Remove Duplicate Drives in Navigation Pane of File Explorer in Windows 11

  • Staff
Drive_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to add (show) or remove (hide) the drives showing twice in the navigation pane of File Explorer for all users in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Removable drives are shown as separate groups in the navigation pane of File Explorer by default in addition to being shown under the This PC group in the navigation pane.

OS drives and fixed drives (ex: internal drives) will only be shown under This PC, and not separately in the navigation pane.

You must be signed in as an administrator to add or remove duplicate removable drives in the navigation pane of File Explorer.

This will not affect drives listed under the This PC group in the navigation pane.

EXAMPLE: Duplicate removable drives in navigation pane of File Explorer

Drives_in_navigation_pane-1.png
Drives_in_navigation_pane-2.png

Here's How:

1 Do step 2 (add) or step 3 (remove) below for what you want.

2 Add Duplicate Drives in Navigation Pane of File Explorer

This is the default setting.

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

Add_duplicate_removable_drives_to_navigation_pane_of_File_Explorer.reg

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\DelegateFolders\{F5FB2C77-0E2F-4A16-A381-3E560C68BC83}]
@="Removable Drives"

3 Remove Duplicate Drives in Navigation Pane of File Explorer

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

Remove_duplicate_removable_drives_from_navigation_pane_of_File_Explorer.reg

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\DelegateFolders\{F5FB2C77-0E2F-4A16-A381-3E560C68BC83}]

4 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

5 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

6 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

7 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

Thanks for the tutorial @Brink .

I just upgraded to windows 11, but I think this also happened to me on windows 10.

In the navigation panel I see THIS PC (with all my drives), and at the same level only drive D (as in the screenshot):

Screenshot_1.jpg

How can I do to also see the C drive (because it is faster to access for me)

Without running a .reg, editing the registry myself so I can undo when I need to.

Thanks.

Hello @pwsandoval, :-)

This only applies to removable drives showing as a separate group in the navigation pane other than also under "This PC".

You should see all drives with "This PC" expanded open in the navigation pane.

Yes that's how it is. But I would like to add C drive separately, just as D drive appears (on the same level, outside of THIS PC) It's possible? Thanks.

Thanks I will wait for your solution if you find it. Meanwhile, if I want to hide drive D (until I get to show C too) I must delete 1 or 2 in my screenshot:

Hey there, @Brink ! First off, thank you for your many tutorials because they have helped me on several occasions over the years.

However, for some reason, this one isn't working... at least not for a cloud program I (have to) use for my work PC. It's called "Egnyte" and it's driving me absolutely bonkers trying to remove it from file explorer. >_< Honestly, I don't want it anywhere - I rather use Winaero Tweaker to add a custom icon/path to the folders I need, but Winaero can only hide the drive from This PC.

I downloaded the "remove" reg file and it removed those two folders, but even after restarting explorer, and even restarting the entire PC, it's still there! It's like a drive on steroids. Do you have any idea what I can do to remove it from the Navigation Menu?

Thanks again, Brink!! :)

Hello, and welcome. :)

Unfortunately, this tutorial is only for removable drives show separately in the navigation pane instead.

I haven't used the Egnyte program before, but you might check its settings to see if there may be one to hide/remove it from the navigation pane.

Oh wow, I'm an idiot. I saw "drive" and totally skipped over "removeable", lol. Well dang... I actually tried getting them to handle it first, but there is no option/they have no solution. :'( Oh wait, it actually shows as a "Network Location"... I'll research that, maybe I'll find something!

Anyways... thank you, Brink!! For this tutorial and the many others of yours that I've used before.

Fantastic! Thank you for doing this. I'll never understand the need to have several duplicate drives beneath all of them in Windows Explorer.

One less inexplicably implemented annoyance to deal with in Windows 11... :-)

Hello @pwsandoval, :-)

This only applies to removable drives showing as a separate group in the navigation pane other than also under "This PC".

You should see all drives with "This PC" expanded open in the navigation pane.
This also works for external drives under This PC. not just separate locations as you claim. I have a Beelink SER6 Ryzen 7 7735hs with Radeon 680m iGPU/APU, 32 GB of DDR5 and both of my external 2 TB Samsung 870 Evos were appearing as duplicate listings after the 2 virtual drives(H and I) created by PowerISO in File Explorer of Windows 11 Pro says System Information in my OS, the advertising online and documentation included but is identified as Windows 10 by Auslogics BoostSpeed 12. After I used this? Both duplicate listings in File Explorer disappeared, no reboot was even needed.

And yes, they were duplicate listings in the same location under This PC because there was no break or distance between listings and the Network selection was at the very bottom. Everywhere else I looked for the solution were idiots just doing copy and paste jobs from other articles. But you were the only one who provided a registry key download. Everyone else was just telling people to create a DWORD key with regedit, which did not work
