Personalization Add or Remove Gallery in File Explorer Navigation Pane in Windows 11

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove Gallery in the navigation pane of File Explorer for your account or all users in Windows 11.

Starting with Windows 11 version 22H2 KB5030310 Build 22621.2361, Microsoft is introducing Gallery, a new feature in File Explorer designed to make it easy to access your photo collection. The content in Gallery is the same as what you see in the All Photos view in the Photos app. Your most recently taken photos appear at the top of Gallery. This includes photos from your phone if you have OneDrive Camera Roll Backup set up.

Gallery displays the contents of the Pictures library. When you include a folder, the files appear in the Gallery but continue to be stored in their original locations.

You can choose which folders are shown in Gallery through the Collection dropdown. You can also add subfolders of existing sources to filter to a subset of your content, such as desktop backgrounds and SD card/camera imports.

Gallery also works from the file picking dialog, bringing that same ease of use to situations such as inserting attachments, building a PowerPoint deck, or crafting social media posts.

A new Add Phone Photos button in the Command Bar in File Explorer Gallery will help with setting up your PC to be ready to show photos from your phone via OneDrive in Gallery. Clicking this button will open a URL with a OneDrive QR code that you can scan with your phone to get started.

If you do not want Gallery in the navigation pane of File Explorer, you can remove it.

Indexing must be turned on to use File Explorer Gallery.

Option One

Add or Remove Gallery in File Explorer Navigation Pane for Current User


If you turn on Show all folders in the navigation pane when using this option, Gallery will always show in the navigation pane.


1 Do step 2 (add) or step 3 (remove) below for what you want.

This is the default setting.

4 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

5 If you have Smart App Control turned on, you will need to unblock the downloaded REG file.

6 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

7 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

8 If File Explorer is currently open, then close and reopen File Explorer to apply.

9 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.




Option Two

Add or Remove Gallery in File Explorer Navigation Pane for All Users


You must be signed in as an administrator to use this option.

This option will completely remove Gallery from the File Explorer navigation pane even if Show all folders is turned on.


1 Do step 2 (add) or step 3 (remove) below for what you want.


 2. Allow Add Gallery to Navigation Pane in File Explorer for All Users

This is the default setting.


A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.​

It came back for me too. I deleted the key again and it is hidden again.

However, this is just a band-aid covering up the problem.

The problem is there is a program scanning all my files and creating this "gallery" of my images.

I want to either get rid of the program, disable it, or at least this function of it, not just hide the folder it's creating.

In detail, I have family photos in one location and a porn folder not only in a different location but on a different physical drive and marked as hidden as well as excluded in search and indexing. The program creating this "gallery" is finding, indexing, and creating tiny copies (thumbnails) of it all in one location.

After taking a closer look it wasn't pictures from the folders excluded from indexing. I had only glanced at it and mistook some PG pics for X pics. The index exclusions are working I just need to exclude some more locations.

I would still like to know how to disable the gallery from being created in the first place.

FYI - After deleting the key from the registry, successfully hiding the Gallery folder, I wanted it to appear again to test some indexing changes I made.

Turning on Folder Options > View > Navigation Pane > Show all folders did not make it reappear as earlier posts have said it would.

Adding the reg key back does make it visible again.

As I noted above, excluding locations from indexing does remove them from the gallery. Also, you can open the gallery before hiding it and remove all the locations it looks in. Apparently is it just a repurposed library folder. Ironic as M.$ is pushing users away from using libraries and into using quick access instead. :rolleyes:

So hopefully the DB of my images is no longer bineg created but that still leaves the program that creates it loose in the background and knowing Microsoft it will be re-enabled at some point by an 'update'.

FYI - After deleting the key from the registry, successfully hiding the Gallery folder, I wanted it to appear again to test some indexing changes I made.

Turning on Folder Options > View > Navigation Pane > Show all folders did not make it reappear as earlier posts have said it would.

Adding the reg key back does make it visible again.

As I noted above, excluding locations from indexing does remove them from the gallery. Also, you can open the gallery before hiding it and remove all the locations it looks in. Apparently is it just a repurposed library folder. Ironic as M.$ is pushing users away from using libraries and into using quick access instead. :rolleyes:

So hopefully the DB of my images is no longer bineg created but that still leaves the program that creates it loose in the background and knowing Microsoft it will be re-enabled at some point by an 'update'.

It would depend on which option in the tutorial you used.

Option two will remove Gallery for all users even if "Show all folders" is turned on.

Option one will only remove Gallery for current user if "Show all folders" is turned off.

Ok, I used the all users option.

However, it's not totally hidden. It's still showing in some menus.

Open VLC - Click Media > Convert / Save > add a file then click the convert / save button > Click browse next to the destination input field

Libre Office does not see it. So no, not all programs do.

(more testing) .... Handbrake does not, so it's not a media program only thing

So, VLC can see it meaning it's still there, only hidden. How to stop it's creation?

That's the problem of not knowing how VLC is referencing it to hide it there as well.

Because they have to keep up with Apple adding pointless "Features" to the OS (and I'm a Mac User). BUT we upgrade because it's free, and um "Security". Don't get me started on when a minor upgrade borked my system, and I had to spend the weekend fixing it. OS was patched next week.

NOW can we make File Exploder and Outhouse (mail) windows SMALLER! Like in Windows 10? I have 3 1080p monitors, and don't want to devote most of one to mail. I need to see it but I don't LIVE in it. White space is good, it is part of design, but Microsoft's decisions are just pointless.

(I'm an efficient user that uses keyboard shortcuts whenever I can)

Note: You must take ownership of the reg key to change the value of the dword from 1 to 0.

There is typo at {e88865ea-0e1c-4e20-9aa6-edcd0212c87c} remove the " ] " on end.

I just tested it and it seems to work without the need to change the second registry key:

Powershell:

My question would be: is it really necessary? it's effect require a computer restart anyway and what it does is like another way of preventing the first key to be applied. To be more clear, if you only use HiddenByDefault after you executed the line above, it would prevent the Gallery to appear again, until you remove the second key, and restart your computer.
