Personalization Add or Remove Home in Navigation Pane of File Explorer in Windows 11

  • Staff
Home_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove Home in the navigation pane of File Explorer for all users in Windows 11.

Quick access in the navigation pane of File Explorer (Win+E) allows you to quickly access and view your pinned locations, frequent folders, and recent files from one location in Quick Access.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22593, Quick access is now called Home. The name Quick access has been repurposed for the pinned/frequent Folders section and Pinned files is now called Favorites to align with Office and OneDrive. Recent and pinned files displayed in Home are now searchable using the search box in File Explorer even if they are not local files, so you can find Office files recently shared with you.
  • Quick access = Displays up to 13 folders that you pinned or frequently opened on the system.
  • Favorites = Pinned files.
  • Recent (Recent files) = Displays up to 25 files that you most recently opened.
Starting with Windows 11 version 22H2 KB5030310 Build 22621.2361, now that File Explorer is powered by Windows App SDK, Microsoft is introducing a modernized File Explorer Home powered by WinUI. Recommended files for users signed into Windows with an Azure Active Directory (AAD) account will be displayed as a carousel and support file thumbnails which is coming soon. Quick Access folders (available by default for users signed into Windows with a Microsoft account), Favorites, and Recent also bring in an updated experience with WinUI.

You must be signed in as an administrator to add or remove Home in the navigation pane.

Removing Home from the navigation pane will not clear the history of your frequent folders and recent files.

Option One

This option will not remove Home from the older Open and Save as type common item dialog boxes.

You can manually change the places bar items in common dialog boxes to remove Home from them though.

1 Do step 2 (add) or step 3 (remove) below for what you would like to do.

This is the default setting.

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
"HubMode"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace_36354489\{f874310e-b6b7-47dc-bc84-b9e6b38f5903}]

Option Two

This option will completely remove Home from all locations, but doing so will also disable the ability to drag and drop to the navigation pane.

This option will no longer work if you have the new File Explorer with tabs and navigation updates starting with Windows 11 build 25136 and build 22621.160.

1 Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe).

2 Navigate to the key location below in the left pane of Registry Editor. (see screenshot below)

That's it,
Shawn Brink

Hello mate, :-)

Are you using option 1?

When is Home coming back for you? After anything specific?
I downloaded Remove_Home_from_navigation_pane_in_File_Explorer.reg and used it. I have been some playing with changing font size and scale and all of a sudden there is was and this has happened a couple of times. I think there is a bug some where because I have had some issues with trying to control the display.

I just tested doing the same in build 25206, but Home is not reappearing.

What build are you running? I'll test it in a VM tomorrow for the same to see how it does.

I have a high resolution display and it is very difficult to get the text the right size, especially in File Explorer, if it too large, underlines in file names does not show. I have been trying to keep the task bar from getting too large and staying away from scaling.

... it clears whatever folders, or virtual folders, are held in the Home namespace...,
Quick Access will still function but, without a namespace header...

Here's everything I used after the In-Place upgrade, to 22H2.
The Classic context menus survived the upgrade.
Only 3rd party tweaker is Winaero.

I use TranslucentTB from MS Store to make my Taskbar clear.
Since 22H2, there's a line on top edge of Taskbar.
The solution is RoundedTB from MS Store. Instructions included in zip

Here's everything I used after the In-Place upgrade, to 22H2.
After an upgrade, all I have to do is this:

I don't have to do a damn thing, everything remains intact, except, for some strange reason, I have to re-add the bottom context menu entry, if I feel like it...

I got 22621.1 and the dreaded never/un used Home button remains with added spacer bars which waste space. Any hacks yet for the new tabbed file explorer? I can loose the tabs too. I will never use them. I looked at the StartAllBack but it looks like it's for W10. Is there some app that removes home for W11 latest build?

I like the tabs in Explorer, but I do not like the Home button and OneDrive directly below it. I want Quick Access at the top, Home gone, OneDrive below.

When will MS just allow us to add, remove and re-order items in the entire navigation pane freely?
