Personalization Add or Remove Home in Navigation Pane of File Explorer in Windows 11

Home_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove Home in the navigation pane of File Explorer for your account or all users in Windows 11.

Home in the navigation pane is the default homepage of File Explorer (Win+E) that allows you to quickly access and view your pinned/frequent locations (Quick access), Favorites (pinned files), and Recent files from one location.
  • Quick access = Displays up to 13 folders that you pinned or frequently opened on the system.
  • Favorites = Pinned files.
  • Recent (Recent files) = Displays up to 25 files that you most recently opened.
  • Shared = Displays files shared with your Microsoft account.
Starting with Windows 11 version 22H2 KB5030310 Build 22621.2361, now that File Explorer is powered by Windows App SDK, Microsoft is introducing a modernized File Explorer Home powered by WinUI. Recommended files for users signed into Windows with an Azure Active Directory (AAD) account will be displayed as a carousel and support file thumbnails which is coming soon. Quick Access folders (available by default for users signed into Windows with a Microsoft account), Favorites, and Recent also bring in an updated experience with WinUI.

File Explorer provides you with quick access to files that have been shared with you. If you are signed into Windows with your Microsoft account, you will be able to view files that have been shared with your account, such as email, Teams chat, etc. If you are a commercial customer who is signed-in with your Microsoft Entra ID account, you will additionally be able to view files that they have shared with others. You can access this feature by launching File Explorer Home and clicking on the ‘Shared’ tab item. You will also be able to view a broader set of file types in their Recent, Favorites, and Shared sections on the homepage. For example, if you’ve recently opened/edited files in Designer, Loop, Power BI, Forms, etc. these files will now be available in your Recent list.

Starting with Windows 11 build 2610.5061 (RP 24H2), you can view the Device Card on the Settings home page. It shows key specifications and usage details of your PC. From the card, go directly to Settings > About page for more detailed information about your PC. This card will show when signed in with your Microsoft account and in the U.S. only.

Starting with Windows 11 build 26100.8737 (24H2) and build 26200.8737 (25H2), File Explorer Home now offers on-hover actions for faster file management. Hovering over a file with your mouse in File Explorer Home will display commands like Open file location and Ask Copilot about this file. You will be able to try out the Copilot integration and attach files easily. This experience currently only works if you’re signed in with a Microsoft account. Work or school account (Entra ID) support is coming in a future flight. This change is not yet rolling out to Windows Insiders in the EEA (European Economic Area).

Starting with Windows 11 build 2800.2608 (26H1), when you hover over a file in File Explorer Home, commands such as Open file location and Ask Copilot appear as quick actions. This experience is now supported for work and school accounts (Entra ID).

Starting with Windows 11 build 26220.7070 (Dev and Beta), Microsoft is re-enabling people icons under the “Activity” column in File Explorer Home detailed here. Microsoft is also temporarily turning off the integration supporting the StorageProvider APIs for cloud providers as detailed here.

Removing Home from the navigation pane will not clear the history of your frequent folders and recent files.

Hello mate, :-)

Are you using option 1?

When is Home coming back for you? After anything specific?
I downloaded Remove_Home_from_navigation_pane_in_File_Explorer.reg and used it. I have been some playing with changing font size and scale and all of a sudden there is was and this has happened a couple of times. I think there is a bug some where because I have had some issues with trying to control the display.

I just tested doing the same in build 25206, but Home is not reappearing.

What build are you running? I'll test it in a VM tomorrow for the same to see how it does.

I have a high resolution display and it is very difficult to get the text the right size, especially in File Explorer, if it too large, underlines in file names does not show. I have been trying to keep the task bar from getting too large and staying away from scaling.

If you listen cartefully, you can hear me not caring.
K, it's weird but Option 2 worked for me...,
... it clears whatever folders, or virtual folders, are held in the Home namespace...,
Quick Access will still function but, without a namespace header...

Here's everything I used after the In-Place upgrade, to 22H2.
The Classic context menus survived the upgrade.
Only 3rd party tweaker is Winaero.

I use TranslucentTB from MS Store to make my Taskbar clear.
Since 22H2, there's a line on top edge of Taskbar.
The solution is RoundedTB from MS Store. Instructions included in zip

Here's everything I used after the In-Place upgrade, to 22H2.
After an upgrade, all I have to do is this:

I don't have to do a damn thing, everything remains intact, except, for some strange reason, I have to re-add the bottom context menu entry, if I feel like it...

I got 22621.1 and the dreaded never/un used Home button remains with added spacer bars which waste space. Any hacks yet for the new tabbed file explorer? I can loose the tabs too. I will never use them. I looked at the StartAllBack but it looks like it's for W10. Is there some app that removes home for W11 latest build?

I like the tabs in Explorer, but I do not like the Home button and OneDrive directly below it. I want Quick Access at the top, Home gone, OneDrive below.

When will MS just allow us to add, remove and re-order items in the entire navigation pane freely?
