System Add or Remove "Processor performance boost mode" in Power Options on Windows 11

CPU_banner.webp

This tutorial will show you how to add (show) or remove (hide) the "Processor performance boost mode" power plan setting under "Processor power management" in Power Options for all users in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Processor performance boost mode allows you to specify how processors select a target frequency when allowed to select above maximum frequency by current operating conditions.

Intel Turbo Boost and AMD Turbo CORE technologies are features that allow processors to achieve additional performance when it is most useful (that is, at high system loads).

You can select to use an available "Processor performance boost mode" setting below for when "On battery" and "Plugged in":
  • Disabled = Don't select target frequencies above maximum frequency. In this mode, processor boosting is effectively turned off. The CPU will avoid entering turbo or boost frequencies and instead operate closer to its base frequency ceiling. This can significantly reduce power consumption and heat output, but at the cost of reduced burst performance and responsiveness in short workloads.
  • Enabled = Select target frequencies above maximum frequency. This is the standard behavior where boost functionality is allowed under normal conditions. The processor can opportunistically increase frequency when workload demands it, balancing performance gains with power and thermal constraints as managed by the system.
  • Aggressive (Default) = Always select the highest possible target frequency above nominal frequency. Aggressive mode favors performance more heavily, allowing the CPU to enter higher boost states more readily and sustain them longer. This should in theory improve responsiveness under bursty or heavy workloads but increases power draw and thermal output compared to the default enabled behavior.
  • Efficient Enabled = Select target frequencies above maximum frequency if hardware supports doing so efficiently. This mode still allows boosting, but with a stronger bias toward energy efficiency. The system attempts to use boost more selectively, avoiding unnecessary frequency spikes when the performance gain is marginal.
  • Efficient Aggressive = Always select the highest possible target frequency above nominal frequency if hardware supports doing so efficiently. This is a hybrid approach where boost is still performance-responsive, but the system continuously weighs efficiency more heavily than in Aggressive mode. It aims to deliver noticeable performance improvements while reducing wasted power in less demanding scenarios.
  • Aggressive At Guaranteed = Always select the highest possible target frequency above guaranteed frequency.
  • Efficient Aggressive AT Guaranteed = Always select the highest possible target frequency above guaranteed frequency if hardware supports doing so efficiently.

this PowerShell will unlock ALL advanced power options, including this one.. for interested parties

Code:
#Requires -RunAsAdministrator

# Disable "Connected Standby"
Set-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power' -Name 'CSEnabled' -Value 0 -Force

# Get Power Settings entries and add/set 'Attributes' to 2 to unhide
$PowerCfg = (Get-ChildItem 'HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings' -Recurse).Name -notmatch '\bDefaultPowerSchemeValues|(\\[0-9]|\b255)$'
foreach ($item in $PowerCfg) { Set-ItemProperty -Path $item.Replace('HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE','HKLM:') -Name 'Attributes' -Value 2 -Force }

Adding it works on mine (I use my own .reg file for the ones I want)., but I set the registry default values to 2 to reveal them in Power options. Since they are lost by in-place upgrades, I have a power shell script that scans the appropriate keys in the registry for the value of two, and generates a reg file ready for loading.

Code:
Function SavePwrExtensions {

    # saves manually made registry mods made to reveal power settings in power Option profiles (by setting attributes to 2)

    $ofile="PwrExtensionsAdd.reg"

    $pwrmstr = "HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00"

    "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00`n" > $ofile

     get-Childitem -Path $pwrmstr | get-ItemProperty | Where-Object {if ($_.Attributes -eq 2) {"#  "+ $_.Description >> $ofile; "["+$_.pspath.substring(36)+"]" >> $ofile; '"Attributes"=dword:00000002' >> $ofile; "" >> $ofile }

     }

It looks like the original @Brink instruction option 1) actually removes it from power config (sets it to 0 instead of 2), or am I missing something?

EDIT:

Anyhow here is the output of my above script (the power config options I find most interesting/useful:

Code:

It looks like the original @Brink instruction option 1) actually removes it from power config (sets it to 0 instead of 2), or am I missing something?

0 or 2 should add it, and 1 should remove it. 0 is what's set when adding it using the attrib command.

this PowerShell will unlock ALL advanced power options, including this one.. for interested parties

Code:
#Requires -RunAsAdministrator

# Disable "Connected Standby"
Set-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power' -Name 'CSEnabled' -Value 0 -Force

# Get Power Settings entries and add/set 'Attributes' to 2 to unhide
$PowerCfg = (Get-ChildItem 'HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings' -Recurse).Name -notmatch '\bDefaultPowerSchemeValues|(\\[0-9]|\b255)$'
foreach ($item in $PowerCfg) { Set-ItemProperty -Path $item.Replace('HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE','HKLM:') -Name 'Attributes' -Value 2 -Force }
Well just tried this powershell command but this failed as well. Decided to ask Co-pilot and this is what it told me:

Why the setting no longer works

1.

Starting with Windows 11 (and fully enforced by 23H2+), Microsoft shifted CPU control to:

  • Hardware Autonomous Mode
  • Energy Performance Preference (EPP)
  • Energy Performance Bias (EPB)
  • HWP (Intel) / CPPC2 (AMD/ARM)
These mechanisms override the old “Processor performance boost mode” policy.

The old setting controlled:

Code

ProcessorPerformanceBoostMode<br>
But modern CPUs use hardware-managed boosting, not OS-managed boosting.

So Windows simply ignores the policy.

Odd. I just tested on a pc and it showed, along with the rest of the hidden. Even laptop (battery, etc) only power options showed on the desktop.

There's all kinds of settings now but my Processor Performance boost mode shows my original settings before they disappeared. However Co-pilot says that is no longer used so not sure it even matters.

2.

You can still add:

Code

{be337238-0d82-4146-a960-4f3749d470c7}<br>
into Power Options, but:

  • Windows 11 23H2+ does not query the value
  • The kernel’s power manager no longer exposes the callback
  • The CPU driver (intelppm.sys / amdppm.sys / acpi.sys) no longer maps it to hardware registers
This is why changing it does nothing.

3.

EPP is the real control mechanism now.

Examples:

  • 0 = maximum performance
  • 255 = maximum efficiency
  • Balanced plans usually sit around 60–120
  • High Performance sets EPP to 0
  • Power Saver sets EPP to 200+
EPP is what actually influences boost behavior now—not the old Boost Mode toggle.

4.

Modern CPUs (Intel 12th–15th gen, AMD Zen 3–5, ARM X1/X1E/X1P) use:

  • Intel Speed Shift (HWP)
  • AMD CPPC2
  • Qualcomm Oryon/Adreno CPPC
These systems decide boost behavior in hardware, not Windows.

Windows only provides a hint via EPP.

The old Boost Mode setting was designed for pre‑HWP CPUs (Skylake era).It is obsolete.

5.

Even if you force‑enable the setting with:

Code

powercfg -attributes SUB_PROCESSOR be337238-0d82-4146-a960-4f3749d470c7 -ATTRIB_HIDE<br>
The UI appears, but:

  • The slider does nothing
  • No kernel event fires
  • No ACPI call is made
  • No CPPC request is updated
It’s a zombie setting.
