want to add a 2nd ssd to my dell xps 8930. not sure if it can be done. to buy new there are 2 kinds of ssd now the old 2.5 inch like the one already installed and a new kind of ssd which is long and skinny and has metallic teeth which look they should be plugged into a slot like a memory card would be. otherwise know nothing about this new kind like where it would plug in. suggestion how to find if a 2nd ssd is addable...internal one that is

Mike - Crucial does not always understand Dell computers that can have both M2 & Sata disks.
On mine, just for example, Crucial thinks it can only take a Sata disk. It does not acknowledge the existence of my M.2 disk.


Msongs - Do not rely on Crucial for this task.
Get your Dell Service manual so you've got a guide to taking the casing off [and finding things] then have a look for yourself.
Take photos & post them here if you need help identifying things that the Service manual does not identify for you.

I am not teasing you.
"Metallic teeth" is an excellent description of an "edge connector". :-)

I got this pic of the teeth from the movie: The Langoliers (1995) (from a Stephen King story)

It seems like a grade Z movie, but they did a great job with the "Langoliers" themselves.
It's not that scary, but you still won't sleep well for a few nights afterward.
It's more creepy, than scary. Definitely worth a watch.


I don't want to ruin the movie by telling you what Langoliers... do.

If Dell doesn't offer M.2 upgrades for your Inspiron 7779, there is a chance that it requires a SATA M.2 drive. Crucial may not sell those any more.

I second the suggestion to check the service manual, though.

They seem to offer a full set of upgrades for the XPS 8930, though. Dell | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial.com

(Both M.2 and SATA SSDs.)

I'm not a Dell supporter, and own none of their products. The only appliance PC I ever owned was a Dell (in 1995), and it annoyed me greatly due to its proprietary motherboard and case.

I am not the OP.
I do not have any problems.
I am not asking for any assistance.
And it was me that made the suggestion about getting the service manual.
I was warning the OP that Crucial is not necessarily capable of detecting both M.2 & Sata connections & disks in dual-drive-capable laptops.
I gave the example of my own main computer which has an M.2 disk & a Sata disk in it, both of which work without any problems. Crucial does not detect the existence of the M.2 connection or the current M.2 disk.
