Solved Adding touchpad driver to rescue ISO

Question, can't you simply drop the drivers that you need into the WinPE or WinRE folder that Reflect uses to build the recovery media?

As an example, I just built a WinRE based recovery ISO image and I see this on C:

Then, when you build your recovery disk / image, it should pull in those drivers.

I have not tried this before, but I'm going to try it now. I have a laptop that requires an I2C driver, so this will be easy to test to make sure it works as expected.

Will report back shortly.

Confirmed. Worked perfectly.

Without any modification, it looked like this:

I simply added the I2C folder and dropped the files in there (you can use any folder name(s):

I then built a new ISO recovery image. In fact, when I boot from that recovery media, I can see it loading the I2C drivers now.

The good thing about this is that you can add drivers for a bunch of different systems so that your recovery media will work on any of them.

I just added several more drivers (WiFi 7, I2C driver for another laptop, etc.) and it all seems to work perfectly.

This was a good exercise, I really needed to get that updated :-)

You can find out what they are

mount the working winre.wim have a look and export any 3rd party drivers

dism++ is handy for that job

Those drivers in the macrium folder are added when macrium starts up. If they need to start earlier integrate them with dism or similar.

I can't see any reason why they would need to start earlier. Since this is WinRE or WinPE, it's not like running Windows setup where you are booting a different OS.

I understood what you were saying, but I'm still not understanding why a driver would possibly need to start earlier. I'm not saying that it might not be necessary, I'm just not clear on why.

Nothing to do with the dism++ add drivers post. I know that works, I do it all the time.

The op then decided to create an iso and obviously doesnt know how. The iso was unbootable, not the wim

I did all that, then extracted the original W7 iso to a folder, replaced the install.wim with the updated drivers .wim, then created a new ISO out of the directory that housed the entirety of the extracted ISO.

The el torito in the iso was either missing or improperly constructed.

This is how I do it using oscdimg

Don't ask me to explain the mkisofs commands, they are clear as mud. The important thing to remember is it is case sensitive. I decided the easiest thing is to rename BOOT/ETFSBOOT.COM and EFI/MICROSOFT/BOOT/EFISYS.BIN ( or whatever the paths are in the scenario) to make sure they are in capitals

Sorry, I still don't get it. What possible boot start drivers would need to load earlier in WinPE or WinRE?

You start booting from CD, DVD, Thumb Drive, external HDD, SSD, etc. WinPE or WinRE loads in RAMDISK creating a disk X:. Then you load the drivers. How much earlier could you possibly load the drivers and why?

Had not thought of that. Can you even load a driver without an INF? If so, maybe that might be the one reason that makes sense in my mind.

My apologies, I am NOT trying to be argumentative here, just trying to understand (curiosity gets the better of me at times :-) ).

I know this an old thread, but I found it trying to accomplish exactly the same thing as OP.

However, I've tried everything that both you and OP claimed worked for you. I've moved driver files into the macrium WinRE/PE build directory -- complete with .inf's and .sys's, I've used DSIM to inject the drivers into both a Boot.wim and WinRE.wim which I then specified to build the macrium restore disk .iso, which I boot using Ventoy.

I included not only HID touchpad, mouse driver, and I2C drivers, but some other seemingly related HID drives to no avail.

FWIW, I do NOT see macrium restore image loading in these drives, like it displays when attempting to load network and disk drivers.

Nothing seems to work. I have no working touchpad. However, I old-fashioned wired mouse in the USB port does work in the macrium restore environment.

Am I missing something? Are there ore driver dependencies that I'm overlooking? I'm about ready to do a build with all the HID drivers included jus to see if that works.

Any clues as to what I'm doing wrong?

Are you using win10 ?

maybe the manufacturer has recovery media. You might find the recovery media boot.wim includes touchpad drivers. I had win10 dell recovery media from a few years back that did. It was massive and had a lot of stuff including net framework. I don't know what the dependencies were for the touchpad drivers.

What is the machine make and model number ?

Apologies for only replying now after almost 2 months. I never saw your post and just stumbled upon it now.
