After Few Hours Sleep, Win 11 Shuts Down

Win 11 Home on Surface Go2. After a few hours of sleep (usually 2-3) I find that in order to start my laptop, I can only use the physical on button. Cannot start with attached keboard no matter which key combo I try. Is there any way to prevent Win 11 from shutting down?

It`s cutting off the power to external items, totally normal.
Is it sleeping or hibernating ?

A couple of things you can try to see if it makes any difference is disabling fast startup Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 11 Tutorial and changing your power plan to high performance. Go to control panel-power options. However, know that since this a laptop the high performance plan will drain your battery much quicker unless you are running it plugged in. Even so, it would be worth plugging it in and testing to see if this solved the issue.

If neither works, we need to know whether your computer is sleeping or hibernating. Open administrative command and type powercfg -a

The fact that it shows 'Standby' rather than 'Sleep' at the top of that list shows that this is a Modern Standby device.

The fact that Hibernate is in the list shows that hibernation is enabled.

From your description in post #1 that is typical behaviour for a machine that has hibernated.


Your behaviour is actually the behaviour I prefer, to go into Standby when I close the lid, then hibernate after a set time if I don't come back to it. That way I don't flatten the battery if I leave it unused for a week or so.

The setting to control this is in the Power Options under Sleep > Hibernate after. Edit your Power Plan and click 'Change advanced power settings' to get there. You could set yours to never hibernate.

An added complication is that this setting is normally hidden by default on a Modern Standby device. Well, it was missing on the clean install of Win11 I did on mine. I had to restore it with this tutorial before I could adjust those settings.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

Thanks much. The Surface Go didn't have "Hibernate after" enabled but thanks to your suggestion it does now. As I usually turn on airplane mode overnite, I don't expect too bad a battery hit - I'll post back after a day or two of "pure" sleep.

Glad I could help, let's hope it works as you wish now.

Your aims and mine are different, but I also want to minimise the battery 'hit' while in Standby. Rather than having to remember to turn on airplane mode before I shut the lid, I chose to disable network connectivity while in Modern Standby.

Your behaviour is actually the behaviour I prefer, to go into Standby when I close the lid, then hibernate after a set time if I don't come back to it. That way I don't flatten the battery if I leave it unused for a week or so.

The setting to control this is in the Power Options under Sleep > Hibernate after. Edit your Power Plan and click 'Change advanced power settings' to get there. You could set yours to never hibernate.

An added complication is that this setting is normally hidden by default on a Modern Standby device. Well, it was missing on the clean install of Win11 I did on mine. I had to restore it with this tutorial before I could adjust those settings.

Can you confirm, you've had no problems after restoring 'Hibernate After' on your windows 11 machine? I tried it on an earlier win 11 laptop (since returned) and started to see random instability, but - never did get to the bottom of it. Like you, I prefer to have my machine go to hibernate by itself after a period of inactivity, especially since 'good old classic S3 Sleep' is no longer available to us. Why they would take away S3 is totally beyond me!

Yes, I can confirm that I've had no problems.

The machine in question is my 'System Three', its specs are in the 'Other Info' section of 'My Computers' below. I wiped it and gave it a clean install of Windows 11 on 11th October 2021.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.
