What do other users use to open simple PDF files?

I thought it was Adobe Acrobat Reader DC. Perhaps it still is. Perhaps there is a special way to download it so that what downloads is not a trial version of Adobe Acrobat Reader?

I read many PDF's although in recent years they've become the default for things like internet receipts etc. and have used Adobe Acrobat free for years but they've become more and more intrusive with updates and every time seemed to be tied to trying to back door you some software like MacAfee...

    This is 1 of 5 HTPC also have built a PC for Blue Iris security software.
SumatraPDF, I do not need 1+GB app to open 1MB PDF, it can take up to 10+ secs just to open the app.
Besides SumatraPDF's dev intentionally avoids adding features that could make it potentially vulnerable.
Portable version is a single executable (20MB), can be run from USB drive and doesn't write to registry.

I also use SumatraPDF (portable version). It's nice and simple and doesn't have extra gunk in the app.

I have not used Acrobat Reader for many years. Firefox or Edge are just fine for me.

I use SumatraPDF too but only for reading books in pdf form so it saves where I left off and remembers tons of books..
and it is very light weight in file size.

I use Adobe Acrobat Reader for general PDF forms to fill out or billing statements..
yes it is huge... sadly..

Some apps are free, but they hide it on purpose. It is like 30 days trial, then some features are restricted.

I use the free download.. have yet to pay anything..
as I only use it occasionally so I am not using the pro or studio versions..

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.
