After Shutting Download My Computer, It Turns On Again!? Whyyyy?

Every time I make sure my computer is turned off, if I accidentally press any key on the keyboard or mouse button or scroll wheel, it turns on again. I don't know why?

I would check what "wake up" options are set in your PC's BIOS. On mine, there's an option called "Resume by USB Device". If I have this enabled and the PC is shut down, then simply pressing any key on the keyboard or moving the mouse boots the PC. Like you, this is not what I want so I have disabled it. However, it does mean that to wake the PC from sleep I need to press the power button.

On my wife's PC, there are separate options to wake from sleep and to boot the PC. So she can still jiggle the mouse to wake the PC from sleep, but this won't boot the PC if it has been shut down.

Your system is NOT shutting down. Are you using shutdown in power menu? If not, how are you doing it?

Try this to test with. Right click on desktop>select new>select shortcut> copy and paste this in the target box C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 0
name the shortcut shutdown
Does this shortcut totally shut off the system?

This is exactly how I shut down my PC. With the BIOS option that I quoted above set to enabled, then just moving the mouse boots the PC. And I mean boots the PC, not resume from sleep or hibernation. Makes no difference if I shutdown via the start menu, or simply press the power button. In all cases the PC is shutdown. Hence why I have this option is my BIOS disabled.

While I might make a user aware there is always a slim chance a bios update could fail, I would certainly not make it sound like he was doomed. Bios update failures are no where close to the numbers as back in the old days. I would go so far as to say it is rare these days. With modern devices it is more important than ever to keep UEFI bios updated. Mine's been updated 21 times in 3 years without a blip.

You are not looking for settings such as WOL. That has absolutely nothing to do with this. However, the setting you are looking for MAY be in the same general area as the WOL setting. WOL only wakes the computer when a specific series of packets are received by the network adapter. It has no effect on the keyboard waking the system.

I wish I could get a screenshot, but the only systems that I have that support the option I am looking for are boxed up in storage, so I'll simply have to describe what to look for. You are looking for some setting that allows the system to be woken from a USB port, some BIOSes will specifically call out wake from the keyboard.

If you have a backlit keyboard, you can typically tell if this is enabled because the keyboard will still have power, and thus the backlight will still be on, even after you shut down the system.

Another possibility is that, as was already noted, this can also be an indication that the system is simply in sleep mode rather than actually shutdown.

RFS has already noted that on their system the BIOS option is called "Resume by USB Device". It may be something different in your BIOS but that should be the basic gist of it.

Gigabyte has had multiple issues with powering on via usb. Look at the screenshot here of that bios and ensure you either do not have those options, or that they are set to disabled.

@hsehestedt there are other instances where WoL have caused this issue with gigabyte too. I don’t type just to move my fingers.. just like I don’t talk just to waste my breath.

I updated my pc specs. Sorry, I am not sure whether they are the latest. I guess not :unsure: . I checked the newest one supposed to be the Radeon RX 7000 series.

That's how I turn off my computer every time: I go to the power menu and select the Shut Down option. And I will try the shutdown.exe tonight. Thanks so muuuuch for your reply!
