AMD Stutter Experienced with fTPM Enabled on Windows 10 and 11

  • Staff
Article Number: PA-410
This documentation provides information on improving intermittent performance stutter(s) on select PCs running Windows® 10 and 11 with Firmware Trusted Platform Module (“fTPM”) enabled.

Issue Description
AMD has determined that select AMD Ryzen™ system configurations may intermittently perform extended fTPM-related memory transactions in SPI flash memory (“SPIROM”) located on the motherboard, which can lead to temporary pauses in system interactivity or responsiveness until the transaction is concluded.

Update and Workaround
  • Update: Affected PCs will require a motherboard system BIOS (sBIOS) update containing enhanced modules for fTPM interaction with SPIROM. AMD expects that flashable customer sBIOS files to be available starting in early May, 2022. Exact BIOS availability timing for a specific motherboard depends on the testing and integration schedule of your manufacturer. Flashable updates for motherboards will be based on AMD AGESA 1207 (or newer).
  • Workaround: As an immediate solution, affected customers dependent on fTPM functionality for Trusted Platform Module support may instead use a hardware TPM (“dTPM”) device for trusted computing. Platform dTPM modules utilize onboard non-volatile memory (NVRAM) that supersedes the TPM/SPIROM interaction described in this article.
    1. COMPATIBILITY: Please check with your system or motherboard manufacturer to ensure that your platform supports add-in dTPM modules before attempting or implementing this workaround.
    2. WARNING: If switching an active system from fTPM to dTPM, it is critical that you disable TPM-backed encryption systems (e.g. BitLocker Drive Encryption) and/or back up vital system data prior to switching TPM devices. You must have full administrative access to the system, or explicit support from your IT administrator if the system is managed. For more information on transferring ownership to a new TPM device, please visit this Microsoft webpage.

So, I have an AMD build. You see my full specs. So, can I safely disable fTPM? I haven't encrypted my drives as far as I know. Or should I just wait for the bios fix?

I'm not sure if your question is directed generally but IMHO we never needed TPM and there is no overwhelming evidence that it provides any real security benefit for those of us security conscious people... so I have disabled it.. until someone convinces me otherwise.

At least AMD has finally identified the problem. My motherboard currently supports only Agesa 1205, hopefully the update will come soon, but disabling virtualization and mitigations for Spectre and Meltdown seems to have done something.

On my gigabyte Aorus Master X570 I do not have the option to tell the bios to differentiate between the onboard fTPM and the discreet TPM module I installed on the header. I have experienced the stutter and its pure donkey balls.

AGESA 1.2.0.4 and 1.2.0.5 brought us this nightmare and 1.2.0.6b was supposed to start addressing some of the issues while the May release is supposed to be the fix. The stutter brings my 5950x and rx 6900 xt to their knees.

1.2.0.6b was supposed to start addressing some of the issues
When I tried this one, BIOS reported damaged motherboard and Windows kept BSODing. I had to revert.

On my gigabyte Aorus Master X570 I do not have the option to tell the bios to differentiate between the onboard fTPM and the discreet TPM module I installed on the header. I have experienced the stutter and its pure donkey balls.
Try removing the discrete module and enable fTPM. Things may improve. My Gigabyte boards also support discrete modules. but I don't use them since fTPM works without issues... and not needing another piece of hardware added to the board.

Add that I'm on an Intel system so...

If you have it... AMD fTPM should be on the Advanced tab in the BIOS, up at the top.

When you install with TPM in windows bios when you remove TPM windows will not boot because it stores in windows whether there are or not so you have to reinstall windows.

Board vendor has nothing to do with what I posted. I was simply talking about removing the discrete module to help mitigate your issue as It wasn't made clear it was fTPM you were talking about. I mentioned "Gigabyte" as those are the boards I use, and like Asus, they also support discrete TPM modules.

As I said, I don't use a discrete module and personally see no need for one. YMMV.

Good luck.
