And I used to smoke good cigarettes. I was a 'Marlboro Man' at one time.

The need of a smartphone is different from situation to situation.
If you need one in work that is one thing you can't get around unless you quit and get another job that dont require it.

Privately... When you are at home, its not really needed, its more of a nice/fun/lazy thing to have as a laptop/desktop can do the same as a smartphone can and even better.
No one will say that a 6" screen is better then a 15" to 24" screen is. No one will say a tiny touch screen keyboard is better then a real keyboard when writing emails, of forum posts in here and other places. Even typing a sms is nicer on a real keyboard.

When you are away from home.. is also a nice thing to have.. but it's more of a addiction and the fear of missing out on stuff online when you are away from home a few hours. Do you really-really-really need internet in your pocket going grocery shopping or going out to dinner with friends.. really?

I live in Sweden where almost everything is digitalized and with my dumbphone, credit card, and my computers i dont miss out on anything.
I used a smartphone for 2½ months when they shut down 2G/3G phone network and i had to wait for a delayed delivery on a new 4G dumbphone.
I really gave it a chance but every time i went online i hated the tiny 6,5" screen and that tiny keyboard, so i always put it aside after 2 minutes and used my 17" laptop instead.
I never found anything useful with that smartphone.. it felt like being back at the 90's again. I needed to start carry a shoulder/hand purse again to keep the phone in, as it didn't fit in a normal jacket pocket.......
....... it was like 1994 all over again, when i also needed a bag to carry the phone.

My dumbphone fit in my jeans jacket front pocket without problem.. a smartphone even the smallest model dont fit.. and that small smartphone would need a tiny pin to type on the touchscreen keyboard if you going to have a 3" or 4" screen.

All around me I see zombies, not even aware of what's around them, mesmerized by that scrolling little toy.

It even happened to my brother. I was in a conversation with him last month and he kept scrolling on his phone while he was (sort of) talking to me. I really found that to be rude, but typical for many, if not most, smartphone users.

Why is there so much rancor toward smart phones or cell phones in general? My wife and I bought a then new Motorola flip phone in 1989 so we did not miss calls from our clients, who would move on to someone else in our business, if they could not talk to a human when they needed them. We would forward our landline calls to this phone, and it helped us to secure business when we were away from the office. We had one phone between us, and it cost, if memory serves me right, around $800 to buy it. Calls cost by the minute in those days! We each had our own cell phones from then on. In 2013, I got my first iPhone, and it could do so much more. My wife held on to her little flip phones until the 3G phone system stopped working, and begrudgingly got an Android smart phone and now, some years later, she texts rather than calls and still deals with her clients. She uses her phone to look things up and plays music and videos on it. She even uses it to take pictures once in a while. She gets pics and videos from friends and stays in touch. I use my phone for a lot. I can ask Siri to set a timer, alarm, or reminder for me or even call 911 in an emergency. We are all Luddites in some way, but unless you can't afford the cheapest smart phone, it is a modern convenience that can do more than call or answer someone. It could even save your livelihood or life!

In 1996 - When I wake up in the morning, even before I go to the bathroom, the first thing I gotta reach for is a 'nice' big hit off that cigarette. ahhh...

I didn't understand this one.. how can a smartphone save my livelihood/life and a dumbphone cant?

Cell phones are overrated!
I need one for communication, and a couple of other things, but, I wouldn't be caught dead walking down the street with a phone in my face all day long!
75% of my colleagues at work have a phone in their face all day long wasting 1000's of company hours per year when they could be doing something productive!

I didn't have a cell phone for the first 35 years of my life..., I'm still here!!!
