Solved An annoyance about smart phones

There definitely were no bad drivers before smartphones. :eyeroll:

It's only one state without a texting and driving law, by the way. I don't know why people can't look stuff up before repeating incorrect things. Use your smartphone.
When I looked it up on my smart phone it said Montana and Missouri were the two states but maybe my phone isn't as smart as it thinks it is. 😉

It's against the law in RI too but whether or not you get pulled over is a complete crapshoot and the odds are in your favor of not getting pulled over. But we sure feel good about having that (toothless) law on the books.
Here you are toasted if they see you... our painted police cars have 360 degree cameras.. so if the police sees it, so does the camera.. and you cant argue in court the camera was wrong. :eyeroll:

I do have a camera in my dumbphone that take good enough pictures if i ever need to take a picture away from home.
All my business i do is over the computer as i write a lot of text and real keyboard and a big screen is a must. also when looking at pictures a big screen is 100 times better then my smartphone i used for 2½ months.
If i want to take real art pictures, i use a system camera as you get a better feel and a lot more functions then a mobile camera can do.

My phone is used for calls only.. once or twice a month i might send an SMS or two.
So if i need to call 112(911) my dumbphone works perfectly, i have both bluetooth headset and speakerphone on that one. :-)
Hi Marie -

I'm glad your system is working for you.

I forgot to mention I am a semi-retired pro photographer and videographer, and that the camera on my iPhone 15 Pro takes great images between 12 and 48 mpxls (+ HD & 4K video) that can rival (quality-wise) what a DSLR or mirrorless camera can create, and have sold those images and videos on stock websites (and believe me, the curators on those sites are picky). My iPhone is also the camera I always have with me when I am out of my studio, and "they" say the best camera is the one you have with you when you want to take a picture! Of course, I do run all of the images and videos from my phone through my computer in Photoshop, or Pro video software before submission. Smartphone or dumbphone, we all use what works for us. I just don't see the rancor toward responsible adults using smartphones from some people.

Yeah i have heard that iphone makes good mobile cameras.. they using the sony chip if i remember right.
But as you as pro photographer knows.. the feeling you get when you hold the system camera in your left hand, adjusting the objective with the fingers to get the right focus or some cases wrong focus when you want some fun effects.. and you press the button with your right hand. That feeling is just gone with a flat phone you have to hold with your fingertips and then tap the screen or press a tiny flat button on the side.
What is the saying... you can't beat the feeling. 😁

I think the problem will only be solved (and probably just temporarily until the hackers figure out how to defeat it) through technology which only makes your phone available during an emergency while you're driving.

Currently, Federal law prevents the blockage of cellular signals. That even extends to prisons and they wonder why smuggled cellphones are a problem. Well DOH! :zany:

Of course, some people are too stupid to ask themselves how they dealt with the issue before cellular was even invented. Their brains can't go back that far. And frankly, it wasn't even that long ago.

It's as if the world began with cellular and Adam & Eve used one.

Many times, the guys who pass these laws don't have a fu*#ing clue, let alone common sense, about how these laws should be applied.

Who said anything about blocking cellular signals? The phones all know how fast they're moving. One could, for example, make only the phone app available once the speed reaches 25 mph (or 600 metric speed units, I dunno what that is).

I remember reading a story about someone who had a car insurance app on their phone which tracks their movement.
The company tried to penalize the user for texting while driving, but the user insisted they where on the subway and couldn't prove it!

I'm with you there. I'm really old school. I used to shoot 3 different formats back in the film days: 35mm, 2-1/4", and 4X5. We learned to be frugal. Each shot was precious. 4X5 large-format film used to cost something like $1 to $4 an image, with processing, and polaroids, because we would take 3 backup pieces of film for each shot: Hopefully one for us, one for the client, and two spares for push or pull processing of the film for exposure. And, it was all upside down and backwards in the view at the back of the camera. We used a cape, and a loupe to check for critical sharpness. We used to load film into the film holders using a changing bag or a darkroom. And now, we get instant gratification with the press of a button! Ain't technology grand? BTW, with all this convenience, and low prices for equipment, it removed the barrier for entry into the pro ranks and made everybody a pro photographer who wanted to call themselves that and made making a real living from photography a thing of the past for most pro photographers! Smartphones also let the clients have adequate cameras to take "good enough" pictures so that they don't even feel they have to call a pro. But technology marches on! :-)

I started with classic film, and as you say.. you really have to be sure before pushing the button. :-) Then the digital world came, and you could take hundred pictures and pick one :-)
I would never ever call me a pro.. i have always had it as a relaxing hobby :-) I started in high-school with black and white film and used the school photo lab to develop my own pictures. even i never will do that again, it gave me a whole other kind of understanding and i think that is why i still want the feeling holding a real camera instead of a phone.. even if the phone gives great pictures.. its just something with the peaceful feeling i cant describe in words. But i have a feeling you understand exactly what i mean with the feeling. :-)
I'm glad for the progress in photo hardware and even a phone can give great pictures.. so i would never want to go back to the analog world :-) as long there is a real camera to hold with manual zoom etc etc... then I'm happy. 😁 😁😁

What was your point?

To recap.... OldMainframeGuy suggested the possibility of making the phone available during an emergency while you're driving. You went on about signal blocking, which is totally unnecessary, and prisons for some reason. I said the cell phone signal would not need to be blocked, and no one mentioned that. (It would actually be safer not to block the cell signal in case of a crash, etc., even if the law allowed it.) Again, the phone knows how fast it's going; most people think about GPS and such for tracking speed, but the accelerometer knows how fast the phone is moving, and every smartphone has one.

So, as a quick hypothetical example, once the phone reaches 25 mph*, it could deny access to everything but the phone app and any maps app. You should be able to use the phone in an emergency, I reckon, while travelling at a decent speed. Sure, most of the time you have an emergency, you're not moving, but some times you are. I remember that one time antspants was chasing me down the highway when he caught me with his first wife.

* : I looked up the metric speed unit, since I didn't know it earlier. It's apparently kiloliters per fortnight.

An accelerometer can't determine speed unless you are thinking of an inertial navigation system with incredibly accurate 3D accelerometers, such as ring lasers, but I'm sure you know this.

An accelerometer can't determine speed unless you are thinking of an inertial navigation system with incredibly accurate 3D accelerometers, such as ring lasers, but I'm sure you know this.
It's not super pinpoint accurate, because it's actually acceleration measured over time (it's an accelerometer after all, not a speedometer), but I was skipping details to get to the point, which was not the super-accuracy of a phone sensor.

Side note, I've actually done mobile apps (for tablets) using the internal sensors, GPS, and cellular data for tugboats.

    ...Where's my horse?
I said the cell phone signal would not need to be blocked, and no one mentioned that. (It would actually be safer not to block the cell signal in case of a crash, etc., even if the law allowed it.)

Sounds like a Catch-22. Dammed if you block it, dammed if you don't block it.

And for the duplicate quote:

(It would actually be safer not to block the cell signal in case of a crash, etc., even if the law allowed it.)

In the event that happened, you could still block everything except 911

Again, the phone knows how fast it's going; most people think about GPS and such for tracking speed, but the accelerometer knows how fast the phone is moving, and every smartphone has one.

In a way, that's still a block, only it's within the phone instead of external. Is that what you're saying? -- -- (Looks like that might have been answered up above)

And do you know of any cases where that's actually happening?

~

PS: My point about prisons still stands. They way that law is being applied is stupid.
