Solved An annoyance about smart phones


Bottom line!! I still can't get onto X...I have tried to do the 2 step routine but doesn't work - the one where you enter user name & pw. for them to contact you and get you running again. I did and then it goes into a spiral asking over and over. The Autenticator bit is more than I can handle task wise. Dumb me but I keep my life simple - so simple me. Bah!!

Been there, done that. You're not alone.

Or how about the entry code that never comes. You're waiting 5...10 minutes...while you're twiddling your thumbs. That used to happen to me a lot.

Yeah, I'd forget about it for now. Maybe get a good night's sleep and try again, tomorrow.

Can you not buy a really, really cheap webcam and point it at the code or whatever, on the screen?

I've not had the need to try it, so I don't know.

@Patsy1011 Did you enable two-factor (or multi-factor) authentication on your account? If so, it should have given you a set of backup codes to log on, usually ten or fifteen.

I've not really had to use my smartphone for anything since installing a decent password manager (Enpass) as it takes care of codes and logins. Not sure of whats available that's free or cheap. I paid about 80 USD for a lifetime version.

I'd agree. My screenshot is for Enpass password manager, Ive set it to auto for ElevenForum.
Login page shows, it enters my username / pass and when the 2Fa security page opens it automatically enters the random one time code. I basically haven't needed a smartphone since installing Enpass. But I do however use MS Authenticator strictly for MS Accounts.

When/if you get into X, change the 2Fa security to recitative a text message (if you can) instead of scanning code. You don't need a smartphone to receive a code to your message service.

To answer the OP's question...Today the world assumes everyone has a smartphone. If you want to deal with websites then you simply have to use a smartphone. It would be nice if all websites could be made to work with flip phones but there is nothing you can do to make them.

But since I don't want that, then that's not an issue.

So far, I've found ways to work around things without having to use one. It can be done if you are willing to do it.
