Anduril and Qualcomm Unveil BlueChip to Rebuild American Computer Manufacturing

 Qualcomm News:

The United States pioneered personal computing and continues to lead the world in designing advanced technology, but decades of offshoring have left America dependent on foreign manufacturers for the computers and components that power everything from personal devices to critical government infrastructure. This dependence creates a national security vulnerability. Conflict or disruptions to overseas supply chains could limit access to essential computing hardware and undermine America's ability to sustain production when it matters most.

Today, Anduril and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. are unveiling BlueChip, a new product line dedicated to rebuilding American computer manufacturing. Beginning with a laptop designed and assembled in the United States, BlueChip will develop American-built computing hardware for America’s most critical industries—including government, defense, first responders, and public safety—and rebuild the suppliers, manufacturing processes, and expertise needed to produce these systems at scale.

BlueChip brings together Qualcomm Technologies’ expertise in high-performance, power-efficient computing and Anduril’s work to rebuild domestic computer manufacturing. San Diego-based Qualcomm Technologies will supply their Snapdragon X Series, providing the laptop’s core computing capabilities, including general-purpose processing, graphics, and on-device AI.

Anduril has already developed functional prototypes of the first BlueChip laptop and plans to begin taking orders in 2027. The engineering effort includes designing the enclosure for U.S. machining, developing battery and power management systems to accommodate existing American battery technology, and selecting metals that U.S. industry can produce and machine at scale. Anduril is also developing a bonding process to incorporate U.S.-made display glass. These are just some examples of the engineering work required to design computers for the realities of the American supply chain.

Building Computers in America

Components sourced from U.S. and allied-country suppliers account for more than 90% of the BlueChip prototypes’ component procurement cost. Anduril is working to expand domestic component production ahead of planned availability in 2027, with the long-term goal of building a fully domestic supply chain.

BlueChip laptops will be manufactured in the United States, with circuit board assembly planned for Anduril's Arsenal-1 facility in Ohio. Anduril is developing domestic production capabilities for enclosures, battery components, and other hardware while qualifying suppliers and preparing for production.

The United States has already invested billions of dollars in expanding domestic semiconductor production, but manufacturing complete computers also requires circuit boards, displays, batteries, and other components still largely produced overseas. Restoring domestic computer manufacturing requires rebuilding that broader industrial base.

BlueChip will take a phased approach, beginning with expanding domestic sourcing and manufacturing, progressing toward eliminating reliance on foreign suppliers, and ultimately establishing an end-to-end American supply chain. The designs, supplier relationships, and production processes developed for the first laptop will support additional BlueChip products, expanding America's ability to manufacture the computing hardware its industries depend on.

Organizations interested in BlueChip, including those in government, defense, and other critical industries, can register their interest at anduril.com/bluechip.

Snapdragon is a product of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and/or its subsidiaries. Snapdragon is a trademark or registered trademark of Qualcomm Incorporated.

I like the idea of bringing some of this back to the US, we're far too dependent on the Far East!

If they achieve even half their goals of eliminating foreign supplies, that will be an economic and technological earthquake IF, IF, IF, IF this succeeds, then some ODM manufacturing could reshore back to the US.

As a side question, where does that leave Japan, the EU and other "used to be" allies?

Well, they remained allies when they imported our manufacturing base, so if they're smart, they'll remain when we take some of it back. If not, they can fend for themselves and see how that works out!

Nobody can possibly regard China as being one of the group Phil referred to:-
Japan, the EU and other "used to be" allies

The whole of the free world will be better off by repatriating manufacturing whichever free world country achieves it but the USA might well be the only one strong enough to be able to do so.

I agree that one of our huge mistakes was letting manufacturing die in the US. The pickle we find ourself in with rare earths should be a wake-up call for sure! 😲
I was working for a floppy disk company in the early 80s when they had multiple manufacturing lines in the US. Then several things happened. There was a partnership with a Japanese company, where they used robots in assembly. Lower costs and better product quality. Then Jugi Tandon came along with Tandon Magnetics, and basically blew most of the other floppy disk companies out of the water. I don't remember where Tandon did its manufacturing, but it was definitely offshore and won the Apple business (for Apple II) on the basis of lower cost.

It was all driven by labor costs in worldwide markets, since shipping costs were a low percentage of total product cost.

You could easily say that the entry of China into the World Trade Organization was a huge strategic blunder. There is no need to go into details here, just to repeat what is well known.

So typical anti-China crap from yanks as usual?
No. It was assumed that China's entry to the WTO would result in "liberalization" of the political system there, and that certainly didn't happen. Instead China has been practicing mercantile capitalism that would impress some 16th and 17th century European counties.

If they achieve even half their goals of eliminating foreign supplies, that will be an economic and technological earthquake IF, IF, IF, IF this succeeds, then some ODM manufacturing could reshore back to the US.

As a side question, where does that leave Japan, the EU and other "used to be" allies?
The US used to be our ally!

So typical anti-China crap from yanks as usual?
Actually, it was me that mentioned China.
