EDIT: Post #9 in this thread describes solution.

EDIT #2 (Jul 30, 2025) : Found a solution that I was able to test on a VM where I was seeing this behavior. See post #16 for a setting that can be added to the .VMX for a VM to solve this issue.

I'm mainly using Hyper-V now but I had a reason to install VMware workstation Pro 17.6.3 yesterday. I created a Windows 11 24H2 VM. I'm having a problem where VMware seems to release both the mouse and keyboard approx. every 15 seconds.

As an example, say I open Notepad in the VM and start typing. After a few seconds, my keystrokes will no longer be accepted and displayed in notepad. At the same time I can see that my mouse pointer has changed indicating that VMware no longer has the keyboard and mouse. I need to click back inside the VM to get it to take control of the keyboard and mouse again. A short time later, estimate of about 15 seconds, the same thing will happen again. I've tried to research this but have not turned up any solutions.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has encountered this and maybe knows of a solution.

Yeah, tried that already. But that tells me that it must be something in my environment. I'll start disabling things to see if anything in particular may be ticking it off.

Thanks!

I have found the latest vmware pro to be a bit buggy as well. I have had this happen as well as the copy and paste functionality not working.

I have found that the CareUEyes Pro 2 uses some unusual practices, the mouse (keyboard response) is slowed down in the guest operating system.

I is old story,
there are some (new? v16.x, v17.x) background processes, while active, we cannot copy/paste.
So we have to wait longer. In the past this reaction time was much faster.

Hi there
Haven't used VmWare for a long time but I did find when I last used it is that a) you need to install VmWare tools (that performs improvements for screen. mouse nad keyboard etc) and b) disabling a laptop touchpad also works.

Cheers

In my case, I did have VMware Tools installed.

Why would I need a touchpad driver in a VM?

In any case, the problem seems to have magically resolved itself. I was using VMware for a good while last night and the problem never appeared once. Maybe the April updates did something.

I had the exact same issue. The following steps fixed it for me:

1. Uninstall vmware tools.
2. Reinstall vmware tools.
3. Shut Down the VM
4. Close VMWare Workstation
5. Open VMWare Workstation
6. Resume the VM.

Hope this helps.

Regards

You don't but in some cases the touchpad driver can interfere with mouse etc - and on a lot of laptops it's quite easy to brush the touchpad just by accident. Disabling it removes that possibility.

Anyone ever find a reliably working fix for this? I am getting this problem, and it happens without VMware Tools even installed, so I don't think it's the culprit.

It turned out to happen only on some machines for me and I did find a fix. Unfortunately, I don't have access to that machine at the moment. When I get in front of it later tonight I'll respond back again.

Okay, turns out I can tell you now. I looked through VMware settings and I remember what it was now...

EDIT:

In VMware, select Edit > Preferences > Input. Change "Optimize mouse for games" to "always". At least that worked for me :-)

Scratch the above line. This is better:

Open the .VMX file for that VM in notepad and add this line:

mks.gamingMouse.policy = "gaming"
