Anyone used their second monitor as a tv?

The OP wants to connect a set top box to a monitor. He didn't say exactly what type it is.

Today all the "set top boxes" I have worked with have tuners built in. You use the their remote to change channels. These just connect to the TV's HDMI port. The TV's internal tuner is never used. A monitor could be used the same way.

A Fire Stick into my one of my HDMI ports. I have a Hauppauge TV card, but in Canada, it won't recieve anything, so I am ready to throw it away.

Total waste of money as far as I am concerned.

And to be honest, I would rather watch TV on the TV, where I can sit in a comfy chair. My office chair is good for office things, but not relaxing.

I hope the OP can figure this out.

I have the Spectrum subscription which allows me to have an app on the phone or computer, independent of other controls. Works great... I often open up a hockey game on my 2d monitor while working.

You can clearly feed HDMI into the monitor from a TV video source, I can't imagine how that is in doubt. I guess the issue is, you need a way to get the audio there as well.

I sometimes park a long YouTube video on my secondary monitor as I work, that's painless.

Audio passes through HDMI cables. As long as you have speakers in the monitor, you'll get audio too.

I know that, but many monitors don't have speakers. My secondary monitor is a case in point. My LG 45" ultra wide monitor has speakers, but if I was putting TV on a secondary monitor, I'd have to replace the monitor.

I see what you mean. My monitor has speakers in it. I usually have headphones plugged into it though so as not to annoy the locals.
