I agree. Most likely .01% of us Windows users frequent these tutorial forums. IMHO Microsoft should have an HTML file onboard any Windows OS that points people to this forum. Right away they can search for answers and get acquainted with DIY tweaks. Or, download reg and patch files to do the work for them. These things are just not in the concious minds of young and older PC owners. Some people still think a computer is like a television. Turn it on, find your channel (which equals open your most used program) then power off when they are done.

I use Explorer Patcher for Task Manager in right-click context menu on Taskbar and also for older right-click context menu in Windows. That's it.

I've avoided 3rd party apps. Instead I've bent Windows 10/11 as far as possible to my liking within the bounds of what MS provides, and adapted to their new ways where I can't go any further.

I think that's one of the main reasons I've never needed to reinstall Windows on any of my machines, and that I've never had an update or an upgrade fail on me. My System One below can trace its upgrade history back from W11, through every version of W10, to an OEM install of Windows 7 on an earlier machine.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

My sentiments quite closely. I too completely avoid apps that modify the operating system.

Where we differ, I like to do a clean install several times a year. I like to periodically have a new, fresh, unadulterated, system that I know is completely clean.

My 'System Three' had a clean install of Windows 11 about the same time as System One got its upgrade to 11. Both are fully supported devices. That was over nine months ago, and I really can't see any difference in their respective system's 'cleanliness'.

Yes, I can appreciate that. There are quite a number on the forum that do the same.

I just like the feeling of a new, lean, clean install with a fresh new registry. I've done quite a lot of them and can do one in about an hour. That's just me. :hug:

Some of my machines have inherited OEM installed software that cannot be reinstalled, so in some cases I have no option. But as I said, I seem to be able to keep them as clean as my clean installs, so I'm happy to just keep upgrading them.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

The app I posted is from The Github where I get all of my .NET stuff that MS uses. I would think that it is a safe source and it is only a Bat file.

I'm on my safe machine now, I don't screw with it much..., the Insider laptop, I push it a bit..., the Insider dinosaur HP, I torture the hell out of it!!! :cool:

I try really hard not to use any apps from Windows, but that is kind of hard to do when you are in The IP Program. MS asks me every day if I would recommend my PC & Build to anyone. This is getting to be annoying but it seems that I only have to put up with this for another month.

I have all the fun of running my RP build laptop with none of the bother. Never joined the Insider program, got my ISO from UUPDump. Still get all the same updates as any Insider would but zero hassle from MS - get to keep my local account too, just sign in to my MS account for the Widgets ;)

    My SYSTEM FOUR was a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e (1st gen) type 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device. This has now been sold. It has been replaced by my System Eight.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

    My SYSTEM EIGHT is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e (5th gen) type 20LN, Celeron N4120, 8GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, a supported device for Windows 11. Currently running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Dev, Beta, and Canary builds as native boot vhdx.

I have all the fun of running my RP build laptop with none of the bother. Never joined the Insider program, got my ISO from UUPDump. Still get all the same updates as any Insider would but zero hassle from MS - get to keep my local account too, just sign in to my MS account for the Widgets :wink:
