Will it connect with 5GHz set in device manager to band N and channel width 20MHz only?

I have tried with all of those settings. When it works, it works great, but when it doesn't connect, it refuses to connect.

From the troublesome laptop, try resetting the network adapters using this tutorial. Know this will undo any options you changed in the adapter properties and put you back to ground zero. Sometimes, when one has attempted a lot of things and made a lot of changes, it's best to start at the beginning.
