Big difference.

1) I've been testing software and hardware for decades. My first foray into official software testing was in the early 90s.

2) I ran Windows 10 Insider builds live on my old rig, which, technically, wasn't supported to run Windows 10 in the first place.

3) I've already mentioned that I have backups in case something does go wrongly.

Bottom line - This ain't my first rodeo. Not even close.

^^^^^^ These two. There is only so much you can do in a VM. And I did start with a VM. Of the leak, sure, but my first foray into Win11 was a VM, not hardware install.

Please guys -- VM's have improved beyond all recognition in recent years -- with decent pass thru of the hardware there's very little that can't be managed on a VM that is normally done on real hardware. Most domestic users probably choose highly paravirtualised systems like VMWare and VBOX but decent HYPERVISORS have minimal OS overhead and are capable given sufficient hardware resources to run almost indistinguishable to running on Bare Metal.

Just think of how many server farms there are out there with "Blade type servers" essentially running a whole "Virtual Infrastructure" for a great swathe of businesses etc -- Cloud servers provide this type of service too -- the Client (usually some sort of SME) will probably not be able to distinguish between what they were running on "Real Hardware" and the "Virtual infrastructure" provided by their Cloud server.

VM now, Hardware pc is in Beta channel so when Win 11 comes to there I will be in both.

Comparing Blade servers to consumer PCs is a far stretch, though. No matter how good it may be, a desktop OS with an implementation of a hypervisor, even a 3rd party one, is simply going to be more limiting than running on hardware, unless you start cherry picking utilitization. No matter how you slice it, consumer hardware, for the most part, is simply not enterprise grade. Even with my ridiculously high RAM build, there are limitations of what I can do in a VM versus a local install.

If you want to include type I hypervisors, then you're going beyond the scope of this, as those are completely different animals, for sure. Same holds true for VHD local booting. Yes, all of this technology has come a long way - but for practical purposes, YMMV as to whether even today's advanced OSs and hypervisors will fill your needs or not.

Can today's hypervisor implementations do more? Absolutely. Does that meaen they are always going to be indistinguishable from a local install? Absolutely not.

1 hardware. Just installed on one of my Intel NUC's that I had lying around.

Edit: I downloaded the ISO file with uupdump today and installed Windows 11 Pro onto Hyper-V on my main computer.

I am always hardware because VM feels like playing a video game. But I think VM is great for a lot of experimentation , software and settings testing.

VM's are ok.. I guess but I don't use them. I would rather run the OS on hardware. Again.. YMMV

I prefer hardware because I want to be familiar with possible issues and troubleshooting with my setup when it is released. I am using it like how I use my daily machine except for banking and online shopping.

One advantage with a VM is that if you are going to test something that can potentially trash your installation, you can simply take a snapshot (checkpoint in Hyper-V terminology) first, then revert back if you need to do so. That can be especially helpful if you get a less than stable dev build.

I do backups and if I have any issues I just restore the system. Easy peasy
