I (wanted to) use my laptop for recording live guitar and midi drums. Laptop is an Acer Swift 3 (SF314-512-56QM) which came preinstalled with Windows 11, Purchased 10th Jan 2023. I use a Zoom R20, Sonuus i2m, and Behringer UCA202 as interfaces. The trouble is none of those devices are located in the preference settings in the DAW.
I am using Mixcraft 9 and Cakewalk. Blank boxes on both !
I have used these audio devices (and software) flawlessly on my old (AMD) desktop and last laptop, and old Fujitsu lifebook 2nd gen core i5. I have upgraded the old laptop from W7 W10 and W11, and it runs the programs fine.
The new laptop , I have updated all firmware, bios and firmware on the devices, even put W10 on the Laptop to find that too had the blank boxes and BSOD! So after deleting drivers , installing new / different drivers and 3 factory installs I am at a loss. I think this is an Alder Lake 12th gen issue.
Perhaps I should have gotten the AMD version instead!
Any Ideas?

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I'm not a musician so I wouldn't know which end of a drumstick was which and claim to know nothing about recording and mixing sound. I don't know if we have musician members here who deal with recording/mixing or not. If so, hopefully they will respond. In the meantime, I would first make sure I was running the latest release of both Mixcraft and Cakewalk. If you are, maybe you can find your answer within the following web pages. Good luck.

Regarding Mixcraft.

I have a recording studio and use Cakewalk (and Presonus Studio One).
Cakewalk default is looking for an ASIO driver. If no ASIO driver, DO NOT use ASIO4ALL! Change Cakewalk Audio Playback and Recording to WDM/KS and see if it recognizes one of the devices. If not, try WASAPI. If neither work, you will need a recording interface that has an ASIO driver.

Cakewalk has a very good support forum and suggest you post there CLICK

The CPU has nothing to do with that type of issues. It's a driver/software support issue. Try some of above recommendations. Also, since both Apps - have dedicated forums with an active user base (there should be some in a similar situation to yours - while using the same software - or at least, far more then in a general W11 forum) - you might find better support there:

Thanks to all that have replied, here is what I have done / tried so far.
I have updated all drivers , firmwares, Bios on everything to latest. Same with DAWs.
Before that I have extracted older drivers , rolled back, installed one at a time and different orders...Nowt. The drivers were all official from Zoom (the Zoom R20 supports Windows 10 & 11), Behringer etc. I tried putting Windows 10 thinking it may be an 11 issue. When that was the same I installed W11 on old gen 2 i5 to try and everything installed and worked fine. I know it's not a W10 or W11 issue. (Blank settings boxes) . I have reached out to most of the companies listed here at the mo I cannot find the link for Intel support ? If someone could I would appreciate it very much. I am still waiting for replies from Acer and Microsoft. If I get a fix I will post here as I cannot be the only person with this problem. Once again thanks!

Its not a PC hardware or OS problem. The problem is the need for ASIO drivers, if the alternatives I suggest do not work.
Also, not Acer or Intel or Microsoft.

I have tried ALL the drivers and they all work in my old system (ASIO or otherwise). In the new system all the ASIO interaction / settings boxes are blank. They have been installed by the system but unrecognisable at the same time. The only difference between the W11 on my desktop , Windows 11 on my old laptop where everything works to W11 on my new laptop is Intel's 12 core hybrid processor !

I have had several recording interface units over the years. MAUDIO, Presonus, Roland, MOTU, and they all came with drivers that included ASIO. The drivers were multi-OS not specific to one OS. The current MOTU interface came with drivers for Win 10 and 11. My old MAudio Fast Track Ultra was purchased in Win 7 days and is still working in Win 11.

Because a device is "plug and play" does not guarantee it has drivers for a recording program.

You can think what you want, but I'll guarantee the problem is vendor drivers or lack thereof.

Dell and Lenovo have just issued fixes so hopefully Acer will follow. I understand what you are saying but I really believe the problem is Alder Lake even Steinberg are not supporting it at the minute.

I looked at the devices you have. The Sonuus is MIDI not audio. The Zoom has Win 10/11 drivers, have you installed them. Not sure on the Behringer unit but the inexpensive units, such as the one you have, are known to have poor latency.

I suspect ultimately you are going to have to get a "real" recording interface unit, Focusrite and even Behringer make entry level units that have ASIO drivers.

The Steinberg link does not address device drivers (ASIO). Dropouts (latency) is a separate issue.

The Sonuus i2m is both Midi AND Audio and works on my old laptop got all its own current and correct ASIO drivers and firmware. The Zoom R20 has its own correct ASIO drivers installed, and are both blanked out in settings and control panel.

Here is a relatively low cost Focusrite Scarlett Interface:
It still won't work in my laptop as my laptop only displays the names of the devices and blanks out any settings which should be available on the ASIO drivers settings. Any buttons settings to do with ASIO on "THIS" system are inoperable or blank with absolutely nothing to adjust whatsoever. The picture is of Mixcraft but does exactly the same with whatever DAW and whatever ASIO device I have plugged in. No matter what ASIO device is plugged in, whether the devices have own original drivers otherwise will be blank.

The Zoom ASIO should be adjustable outside of the DAW from the PC control panel, that is also blank. Like I say everything works in my other PCs.
I even installed my old Fender Mustang III with the original Fender ASIO and that was exactly the same , it shows up but leaves you nowt to adjust.

I am awaiting more news from Acer and other forums.

I have just done a little research and it's quite possible that everyone is correct ...

The alder lake is a specialist hybrid gaming processor [at the time of it's initial release it was by far the fastest gaming chip on the planet]. However, as is always the case the developers of 3rd party hardware and even software are not always prepared or maybe capable of making the required modification to either the hardware or software [drivers] for some time after the initial processor release, [there is sometimes a decision taken that they will not ever support the new hardware - [especially if the forecast for the processor sales does not meet the required costings]

There are postings on the Cakewalk forum, computer section, by a person who owns/builds DAW's (desktop recording computers) that he has tested and is offering 12th gen CPU's as a customer option. This person has big time Hollywood and TV clients, not just small or home studio clients.

FWIW he said he has a 13th gen and is testing this now.

Well after weeks of experimenting I may have found a fix. ( I just hope it sticks). There are no Native ASIO drivers at the moment supplied by Acer or similar (I have found ) on MS Update catalogue.
So I followed this link :
and extracted a Dell Realtek driver , just ran the .exe and installed, but the drivers still didn't show up ...until I used the thunderbolt port, all the blank settings then became available, don't know how long this will last, or if update will bugger it up. But at the moment it's working better than it was 2 days ago. Just need a proper Realtek/Acer approved driver.
