Solved Audio in computer cannot get to amp


Don't worry, I have seen it before. A wrong driver seemingly correctly installed mutes the sound. Install the proper driver to restore functionality. Don't blame Windows 11 for everything. If it works in Windows 10 64-bit, 99.9% works in Windows 11 too with the same drivers and same settings.

While that might be true, typically a wrong driver won't install, and you'd get a warning such and such driver "isn't supported by the hardware".

At any rate the drivers I linked to are for the OP's board. And yes, the same driver [6.0.9313.1] dated "2022/08/08" is listed under both 10 & 11.

That said, I'm a bit suspicious of the OPs issue as something doesn't sound right.

Realtek drivers are the exception to the rule. In other devices an incompatible driver won't install (at least automatically, in some cases can be forced manually). In Audio devices I have seen many cases that a Realtek driver is installed of the wrong model or without even the card being a Realtek. As a result no sound comes out of the speakers or in rare cases the sound is distorted (too much gain). Been there done that.

Dru2 is correct, "I'm a bit suspicious of the OPs issue as something doesn't sound right."

This seems to have been a one-off specific to MY machine and its current installation of Windows 11 21H2 Build 22000.1165. I say that because replacing all the audio drivers solved my no-sound problem but the troubleshooter has now gone walkabout. I tried to run it this morning to see if "An unexpected error (still) occurred." Settings to Sound brings up a semi-responsive window (will not scroll, cannot select ">" details) but I could run the Output devices check which squeaked once and ended at "An unexpected error occurred."

After I fix my wife's studio sink (should be easy, it's just plumbing), I plan to download and install 22H2.

If your computer is unsupported, you must disconnect from the internet before upgrading to 22H2, even if you have bypassed compatibility check, otherwise it will fail after a while. I have confirmed it in at least 3 computers.

Not sure what "unsupported" means in this context. The box passed the compatibility check on initial Win 11 install. Microsoft promises to eventually send me 22H2 but in its own good time. Do you mean that I should download an installation USB version of H22 and install it after I have disconnected the cable from the router? I want to do something because I no longer trust this install of the OS.

Please read the OP's posted system specs. That machine meets all Windows 11's requirements ;-)

if you lose the sound again, try this. Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers > Realtek(R) Audio > Driver > Update Driver > Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer and select High Definition Audio Device. I'm running the Insider Dev build on my desktop and this is the only way I can get my speakers working. I have to do this every time MS releases a new build.

MS knows about the problem and with every new build I keep hoping that this is the build that is going to fix my sound driver problem.

Edit: I have two USB sound cards that work great.

I suspect Windows Update finds an incompatible audio driver that is newer than your working driver, replaces it without asking and hence your issue. The only way to stop that is by installing the working driver and then run Windows Update Show/Hide Tool to hide (block) any driver updates. Download the tool first to be ready, restore your working driver and then immediately run the tool and block the update before it is installed automatically. Been there done that too, this is a common issue with older computers (working drivers being replaced by newer generic drivers by Windows Update).

If I remember correctly, I did use Show/Hide to block the driver. I just finished running Show/Hide and the only drivers I can hide are Intel drivers. Nothing is listed when I clicked on Show hidden updates. I also added this to the Registry.
