Best way upgrade to Windows 11

Hi all

My laptop has W11 and I like it but my Desktop has 10, the CPU is not compatible but question is I know I can bypass but will it work?

Mainly I only use it for MS Office and browsing and the specs are:

Dell Precision 3620
Intel Xeon E3-1220 v5 3Ghz CPY
16GB RAM

Any help or advice gratefully received.

I run Win 11 on an incomparable laptop (processor) & runs smoother than it did on Win 10. 10 is still supported ’til 2025 so feel free to upgrade now or wait until 10 is no longer supported.
I’d upgrade when the 23H2 is released.

In this video, i will upgrade Windows 10 to Windows 11 on unsupported computer hardware. Although Windows 11 has a higher system requirement, you may still be able to perform an upgrade on an unsupported computer. The Windows setup has an “appraiser” service that checks to see if your computer meets the minimum hardware requirements for that version. It’s possible to replace the appraiserres.dll file in the Windows 11 setup with one from an older build of Windows 10. In order to replace the Windows 11 DLL with one from Windows 10, you’ll actually need the setup files for Windows 10.

I do not use incompatible hardware myself, but I know lots of people have since 11 was released and have been happy with the result. But if I was thinking about it right now, my biggest consideration would be the fact that MS has already shown to be taking steps that will affect the users who do it. I would stick with the Windows 10 horse as long as it would carry me. Then I would examine the situation at that time to see what changes MS has implemented that would cause me grief if I upgraded an old incompatible machine to 11.

Same as @glasskuter says, I need to be able to see what some of my clients see so to that end, and not having a computer that would properly install Win11, I got a new Notebook the month Win11 came out and 6 months later a new Desktop. I don't do much customization of them. I'm not having much trouble with either Win10 or Win11 running the same programs on each. Having previously been in the Win10 Insider Preview I took to heart the warning NOT to use it on the only computer or a production computer as things would change as development proceeded. Some settings will still get set back to default even on the RTM version.

It's easy. Just copy the 3 lines below, paste into notepad and save as upgrade.reg


Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

"AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU"=dword:00000001

Run as admin and when finished, run an Inplacement with an WIN11.iso.

It should not take more than 30 minutes.

I was in the same boat and did the same thing. I had 2 perfectly good i7 Windows 10 machines. Still using one of them.

Most of my small customer base depend on me to maintain their stuff and I've been asked to install 11 on their incompatible machines but I wouldn't do it. It's been my thinking from the beginning that MS could and would at some point cut off all or parts of 11 running on incompatible machines. I still think that. I believe everything has a life span. I tell them the only thing I've known of in my entire lifetime that consistently ran trouble-free longer than 10 years was the old Frigidaire refrigerator....back in the fifties. That's logic most of them can relate to.
