good evening everyone
i just received a dell 7750 laptop. and would like to add another ssd.
i noticed that the ssd that is installed with win pro 11 is set to raid.
if i change that setting will i have to reinstall windows ?

You need two or more storage drives to use RAID mode so if your computer have two SSD then enable RAID if your computer only have one SSD disable RAID mode.

Assuming you want to add another SSD for additional storage go into your bios and enable AHCI mode.
You shouldn't need to reinstall windows.

If you switch from RAID to AHCI in the BIOS settings, you may not be able to boot into Windows.

This is for Windows 10, but it's probably the same under 11: Switching from RAID to ACHI? | DELL Technologies

Short version: configure the PC so that its next boot will be into Safe Mode. Go into the BIOS settings, and switch SATA to AHCI. Boot into Safe Mode. Configure the PC to boot into normal mode. Reboot. That is supposed to work.

I'm not sure that it's necessary to switch to AHCI to add a SSD. I believe that the PC won't automatically put it into a RAID with the existing SSD,

Task Manager will show your single Nvme drive as in RAID mode if Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver is installed. So be careful or let sleeping dogs lie.

Every system is different, there isn't a general rule. Some prebuilts for Intel set RAID mode by default to use the Intel driver, that they prefer to the Windows AHCI driver (likely it's faster). In some old AMD motherboards (not compatible with Windows 11 officially) AMD states to use AHCI and do nothing (Windows 10 will install its AHCI driver). I have two of these, one with W10 installed as AMD says, and other with Windows 7 with a RAID-0 mounted in 2013 that has also known XP and Vista. In this computer you can plug any disk to the relevant (SATA) ports and it will work in AHCI unless you define in the BIOS a RAID with it and at least other disk.

I guess you can just plug the new SSD and use it for storage immediately, or set up a dual boot with more complicated but logical maneuvers.

I haven't purchased a Dell (or any other appliance desktop PC) since 1995.

As far as I know, all Dells have the BIOS set to RAID, and use the Intel RST drivers. (Not, of course, the Alienware AMD based desktops.)

from my experience in the past changing to AHCI after a system has been installed, breaks the installed system.
if you wont to change to AHCI then a reinstall was needed.
and i really don't wont to reinstall windows 11.
i got it installed, but the bios isn't letting me see the first ssd.
witch is fine but i usually use part of the windows ssd for storage so i can hand things back and forth.
but it is working and working well.

i have flash back of installing windows for work groups 3.11, what was it 15 floppies. no i'm going to leave it alone lol.

Between steps 5 and 6, I would make sure Windows has installed the drivers for the controller before turning off safe boot, just to be safe (pun intended). Also, one can enable safe boot in MSConfig, on the Boot tab, if command lines make one nervous.

I'll copy the SuperUser answer here, for posterity, but future visitors, this is totally lifted from SuperUser.

There is actually another way around this. Before you begin, make sure you remember your PC password (not PIN), or else you would be stuck in safe mode forever (with this way of entering safe mode). Also, I advise you to disable BitLocker before entering safe mode, or else you would probably need to provide a very long code to unlock your computer (not tested).

Booting into Safe Mode will work even though the storage mode has been changed... Windows will notice the change and load the correct driver on the next normal boot. Basically that means, you can do this:

  1. Run cmd as administrator (not PowerShell, you would have to escape {...})
  2. Copy-paste this command, which will start Windows in Safe Mode the next time you reboot:

    bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal
  3. Restart the computer and enter UEFI/BIOS setup.
  4. Change the SATA operation mode from RAID to AHCI.
  5. Save changes and exit Setup and Windows will automatically boot to Safe Mode.
  6. Launch cmd again, as in step #1.
  7. Copy-paste this command, which will start Windows in Normal Mode the next time you reboot:

    bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot
  8. Reboot and Windows will automatically start with AHCI drivers enabled.
Note: Switching to AHCI is essential if you want to install any Linux as RAID mode is to my knowledge not supported, so you would not see your drive(s) in the installation menu.
