I had another problem with my Dell laptop with intermittent black screens on booting. This was due to a loose GPU connection where the GPU cable plugs into the screen. On many Dell laptops this cable is routed close to the hinges and the cable can get flexed after opening the screen many times causing the poor connection. When you get a black screen, plug in an external monitor or TV to the HDMI connection. If that works then a loose laptop GPU cable is possible. To fix it I had to almost completely dissasmble the laptop - fotunately Dell publish very good free service manuals.
